To be cross at P-I-L's yet again not keeping receipts?

P-I-L have bought DD2 (2.2) a VTech Discovery Tree, which we had already bought when she was 12 mths old(they never discuss what they are buying with us first)and we have sold it, as she has outgrown it.

They can't remember where they bought it,and don't keep receipts!

Sell it and buy something else and just smile.

compo · 25/12/2008 18:46

take it to a charity shop and ask them to get something else
or just give it back to them and let them deal with it

Sawyer64 · 25/12/2008 18:48

I did ask DH to have a "gentle word" before xmas to ask them to keep receipts and not to cut all the tags off of clothing in particular.

After xmas when the clothes need returning because they are too small, you have to figure out where they are from, and then you can't even buy anything decent with the "sale" price,as you have no receipt

I guess I do sound ungrateful. . . but it is a little annoying, and ofcourse DH forgot to have a gentle word!

just don't tell them about it and eBay it.

FrannyandZooey · 25/12/2008 18:54

i expect dp was too embarrassed to ask them to do what you asked
it is basically like saying "make sure we can take your presents back and get the money as we are bound to hate them"

don't get me wrong i will happily swop things if they aren't right for us
but i think making a big deal of it with the giver is quite rude tbh

Sawyer64 · 25/12/2008 19:04

I just wonder what they would do if the toy or clothing was damaged? Am I then just supposed to keep it anyway.

Surely its common sense when buying for DC that things don't always fit,or work properly.

I just hate things going to waste when the DC's could otherwise enjoy a replacement.

i don't say anything to them, thats why its so much easier if DH mentions it to them first,no upset,no waste, and happy DC's.IMO

Could it be that they buy from Ebay or sales themselves, and may be embarrassed for you to know that?

cornsilk · 25/12/2008 20:52

Lots of people spread the cost by buying stuff throughout the year - in which case you might not be able to take stuff back anyway.

I would only ask for a receipt if it was a duplicate or was too small. Any other reason and I would either regift, try and take it back for an exchange and if that failed ebay it.

randomxmas · 25/12/2008 22:39

Could you just say thanks & then sell it or give it as a pressie to someone else or donate it?

I will E bay it,but I have only just got rid of the one we bought her through E bay!

If you knew my P-I-L,they wouldn't be able to use the PC for EBaying, wouldn't be seen dead at a Bootsale! As for spreading the cost they are loaded and like everyone to know it!!

We always keep receipts in our family, especially with childrens pressies,as its difficult to buy just what you/they like, and sizes seem to differ with each shop etc.We offer the receipt and don't find it offensive or rude to exchange gifts.

I'd far rather someone change something that fits better,or they like better.

I'm with you Sawyer - when I give a present I want the receiver to have something they want/find useful etc, and I hate waste. I'm always offering receipts if they want to change it which I'm sure others find odd, but I'd rather they have something they want.

Ebay, regift or donate to a charity shop I guess!

stoppinattwo · 25/12/2008 23:23

lol they didnt buy the one you sold on ebay by any chance!!!

Sawyer64 · 26/12/2008 10:52

No don't think so! This one is new and in packaging.

PILs did this to us too and bought the exact same thing we bought DS for xmas....they had already set it up and everything
DH told them to put it away as we were visiting them before xmas and it can then stay at their house. They are very generous but it does annoy me that they don't think to ask first and then things are wasted

Sawyer64 · 26/12/2008 11:43

Hear Hear Hari!

A little "communication" would go a long way IMO.

We used to have this problem with nephews and nieces - didn't know what to buy as they seem to have everything and once or twice we bought duplicate presents.

We solved the problem - we stopped exchanging presents.
