To have NOT replaced my burnt out Christmas tree lights two days before Christmas?

we bought some pretty explensive lights from reputable garden center..had them since beginning of dec and at wekened they wouldnt work, looked at control box(flash/strobe/flicker etc) and it was stuck to carpet!?..the box had overheated, melted itself and the goo/chemical inside had seeped out and glued itself to carpet!!

dp took them back tonight and they had none of these left only coloured ones, so i said to leave it..we have lights on window(tree in window), lights on fireplace and lights on fireplace in playroom.
But i feel a bit scroogy to get a refund instead of replacement (colour) lights..i just didnt see the point 2 days before Christmas, we'd had them up a month and would be taking them down next week??..am i a miserable old money grabbing git??

yeah they were dangerous, dp took them back, i went last night but they were closed, id have 'had words' but im thinking dp just asked for refund when i said too and none left!
Will get some for next yr obv, hopefully in sale then i can pack away with decs from this year, but feel a bit stingy not having lights on my tree
