.. to think that DH shouldn't have gone shopping for MY christmas present 4d before Christmas, and bought himself the very thing I have bought HIM for Christmas!!

I could weep!! DH is really hard to buy for- he is into racing bikes and motorbikes and likes specialised stuff, so most years I ask him what he wants and then buy it, which is a bit crap, and no surprise at all. In previous years I have tried to surprise him, but never seem to get it right.

This year we said we weren't going to buy gifts for each other at all, then rescinded and decided on a budget of £20. I've been watching what he's been looking at on ebay, and noticed he'd bid a few times on a particular game for his wii, but hadn't got it, so when I sourced one on the net going for far cheaper than he had bid, and worked out I could get the game and the gun thingy that goes with it for £18, I was rubbing my hands in glee. I knew he would never suspect I was getting him it, and was happy that not only would it be a surprise, it would be something he actually wants!

I ordered it and told him to buy NOTHING for himself in the run up to Christmas.

He came home today complete with game and gun!! I had to tell all, and I am gutted. I haven't even got the damn thing yet, so can't send it back (which would be a complicated process anyway), and he bought his second hand, so probably can't take IT back Looks like we will be selling one of them on ebay, but I am so mad at him- my surprise is ruined, and I can't afford to buy him anything else- nor have any other ideas. He feels suitably bad about it, so there is no point ranting at him really, but GRRRRR! Who goes out and buys themselves a present 4 days before Christmas, when they have been specifically instructed to not do this very thing? (Of course, he has no recolection of me telling him this )

I have to tell the DSs every time we go out NOT to try to buy themselves anything with their pocket money at this time of year! Sympathies that your DH hasn't quite taken this on board yet!

oh, I feel your pain

my dd often buys things with her pocket money that I had already bought for her

at least I tell myself, I have her tastes nailed

what a pisser

Joolyjoolyjoo · 21/12/2008 17:25

I know- I guess it means it WAS/ would have been a good present! On the plus side, he feels so heinously guilty about seeing me so crestfallen that he has taken the 3 kids over to my dad's . The gift of peace and quiet for an hour or so is much appreciated!

Take it and wrap it, so he can notn have it before christmas.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 21/12/2008 18:24

lol, lizziemum- think he feels too bad to play with it now anyway, but will do that! To add insult to injury, he didn't even manage to get anything for me yet! He said " I really didn't think you would have got that for me" yeah, cos it was to be a SURPRISE!

He is officially an eedjit . DH knows not to buy anything he has ever mentioned in the run-up to Christmas or his birthday, without checking first....

Alibear1 · 22/12/2008 15:16

Oh men are so rubbish at things like this. I literally had to sit on DH last year to stop him buying things before xmas - even when I had all but said that they were his presents from me already so no need!

YANBU, but at least he's sorry and I'm guessing he won't make the same mistake again - you hope!!

BouncingTinsel · 22/12/2008 15:22

Joolyjoo - I did this to my DH a few years ago... I saw a particular thing I was after on a special offer, didn't think it was likely that he'd bought it for me for Christmas, when I showed it to him he had to confess so I could take it back!
