today was fancy dress day at school, and the letter said that prizes would be given for the 'most creative costumes' I spent hours making my old wedding dress nets into xmas tree dresses for my DDs, and making a top for DS1 about the 'spirit of xmas' (pictures of what xmas means etc) and guess what won????!!! A snowman costume brought from Asda!!!! I should have just brought them something!!!

oh that annoys me

dizzyjingles · 18/12/2008 22:14

yanbu is prizes were supposed to be for most creative costume - ASDA is not, in my book, creative!

Yurtgirl · 18/12/2008 22:15

How is a cheap costume from Asda creative - Arggggggggh!

DontEatYellowSnowItsWeebump · 18/12/2008 22:16

I can't believe they gave the prize to a shop-bought snowman! Poor you. Oh, and your little ones.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/12/2008 22:16

Do you know it definitely WAS from Asda?

SparklyGothKat · 18/12/2008 22:17

my DDs made it to the final though. I just can't believe I spent 2 bloodly evenings doing it and it gets given to a shop brought costume

I had this at halloween - me and DD1 spent ages making her into a vampire - and what won was a pretty pretty shop bought "devil" dress - so YADNBU!!!!!

SparklyGothKat · 18/12/2008 22:25

that happened to DS1 at the holloween disco too, spend ages making him in a zombie with ripped clothes, fake blood, make up etc, and then the best costume was a shop brought one, why do I bother?

TheBayingBanshee · 18/12/2008 22:25

YANBU, I am going to sound like a mad old granny saying this (I'm not btw) but when I were a lass we all had made costumes and it gets on my tits that my kids expect bought costumes every single year. What happened to winding toilet pape round you and being a mummy or something.

I had tinfoil fairy wings that wouldn't stay on, my kids would spontaneously combust if I suggested the same for them.

Bah humbug to today's fancy dress. OP you have my sympathy.

Alambil · 18/12/2008 22:28

This REALLY pisses me off.

REALLY REALLY REALLY.

Same happens with the sodding Easter hat competition; DS spent HOURS labouring over his - it was a proper top hat style decorated by him (my mum MADE the hat from cardboard) and this kid won who had literally rolled an enormous bit of paper (think cat in the hat height) round his head and scribbled on it; no picture - just random scribbles.

I am annoyed on your behalf.

I will NOT pick shop bought / parent made when I'm a teacher!

SparklyGothKat · 18/12/2008 22:30

I am not saying they should have won btw, but I feel that the 'most creative costume' prize should have gone to the costumes that required more than opening your purse at the checkout IYKWIM. I saw some fab costumes that parents had made, and yet a shop brought one wins!!!??

OP posts:
Tortington · 18/12/2008 22:32

it pisses me off too, however i think there must be some motivation behind this choice = either favourite kid who has a mum on pta and kisses school arse
or demotivated kid who needs extra umph
