This has been playing on my mind for some time... didn't really know where to place it... so i'll cut a long story short.

I work for the local government (temporarily) and have discovered myself in an office containing 3 religious women and one quiet man that tries to exclude himself from the team.

I also come from a religious background but i'd never dare try and inflict my views on somebody else... it's just wrong isn't it? However not only do they quote things from the bible 24/7 they have made snide remarks about me wearing trousers because women shouldn't and one claimed that women should 'no their place'.

I told the one who had said it to me to shut up as she had no right to say such a thing and went on to say she's nothing special and i'm sure God would be ashamed of her to penalise me in such a way. She looked very bewildered and muttered that she knows her right from wrong. I didn't reply.

Should i make a complaint even if i am going to be at this placement for a short while?

Just say "judge ye not, lest ye be judged" - should shut them up.

And if women knew their place, what are they doing at work? shouldn't they be at home looking after their households?

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 15:53

HeadFairy - thought about saying that to them but they always have a come back.

Wow - your Christmas do will be a hoot! Do a Secret Santa and buy a cheap sex toy for the one who spoke out of turn.

HeadFairy · 16/12/2008 15:54

Say it quickly then run out of the room

Surely they can't answer back to the word of God? Heathens!

jinglebongo · 16/12/2008 15:54

What religion are they?

Coldtits · 16/12/2008 15:55

"Be quiet please, I am not interested in works of fiction whilst I am trying to be a productive member of the team"

MrsMattie · 16/12/2008 15:57

Complain formally to your line manager and to HR. Who the HELL do they think you are? Weirdos.

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 16/12/2008 15:57

It's a bit bizarre and hard to believe tbh in local govt- they aren't known as hotbeds of religious radicalism. If you think it's worth it, complain to your manager or HR, as it contravenes equality legislation.

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 15:57

jinglebongo - Catholics.

As far as I'm aware, the Bible makes no mention of trousers, whether for men or for women. Perhaps you could challenge them to show you the relevant passage.

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 16/12/2008 15:59

And I've never heard of trousers being an issue for Christians either- very strange!

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 16:01

Also i find it really creepy the way they are all similar types of people and all managed to get the same job titles.

I find it really just... strange.

OP posts:
HeadFairy · 16/12/2008 16:01

Well I went to convent school and the nuns wore trousers all the time, so they're talking crapola!

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 16/12/2008 16:01

tiredsville · 16/12/2008 16:02

Haha Catholics. How strange, this is a new one.

HeadFairy · 16/12/2008 16:02

smileplease, we have a bit of a Christian mafia at work too, there's a senior manager who's clearly incompetent, he's had complaints from almost every member of my department, but he's been promoted time and time again, plus he has privileges other managers don't have because he goes to the same church as one of the directors.

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 16/12/2008 16:04

Sorry to post twice by mistake. I was brought up a strict Catholic, and I think I would have heard of the trousers thing, but I haven't. Could you have the wrong end of the stick?

alexpolismum · 16/12/2008 16:07

Catholics?? I've never met any militant trouser-hating Catholics! Sounds interesting.

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 16:07

this page

Quotes the bit in the bible about trousers, i've tried to research a bit and i think it's just absolute bollucks.

I have never heard of the trouser thing amongst catholics either

Tell them your partial to a bit of devil worshiping at weekends, ask them if they want to join you sometime

littlelyn · 16/12/2008 16:10

It's a load of pants.

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 16/12/2008 16:13

Thats a baptist site though- Catholics have never followed that as doctrine. There are all sorts of odd things in Deuteronomy, like the inn-keeper who let his guests shag his daughter to show hospitality, but it doesn't mean that anyone but the oddest of cults would endorse it. I think you must be barking up the wrong tree with the catholic thing...perhaps they are mates of tom cruise?

tiredsville · 16/12/2008 16:15

lol bitoffun

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 16:15

Rofl at Tom Cruise.

I'm sure they are Catholics... i just assumed they were extreme.

My dad is quite "religious" and used to ban me from wearing trousers as a child. Apparently it's some odd interpretation of somewhere in the Old Testament imploring women to dress decently or some such statement. Basically some controlling people like to translate it as not wearing men's clothing (e.g. trousers )

He has similarly odd ideas about women wearing make up and jewellery. This is due to a verse in Proverbs suggesting that beauty should come from within - in my interpretation this does not say women should not wear make up etc.

I think that some people (men and women) like to twist certain religious ideas to suit their own rather odd opinions. Makes them look "better" perhaps if it is because of their religion. Makes me

Try wearing shorts op, with a see through top!
