This has been playing on my mind for some time... didn't really know where to place it... so i'll cut a long story short.

I work for the local government (temporarily) and have discovered myself in an office containing 3 religious women and one quiet man that tries to exclude himself from the team.

I also come from a religious background but i'd never dare try and inflict my views on somebody else... it's just wrong isn't it? However not only do they quote things from the bible 24/7 they have made snide remarks about me wearing trousers because women shouldn't and one claimed that women should 'no their place'.

I told the one who had said it to me to shut up as she had no right to say such a thing and went on to say she's nothing special and i'm sure God would be ashamed of her to penalise me in such a way. She looked very bewildered and muttered that she knows her right from wrong. I didn't reply.

Should i make a complaint even if i am going to be at this placement for a short while?

hmmm, I'm a Christian and this does sound a bit odd. I'd think its fine for them to discuss their beliefs, particularly amongst themselves, but they should respect that you have different views and let you have your opinions too!

How about "take the log out of your own eye before you try to take the spec out of mine?"

:-)

Direct them to this page.

onepieceofbrusselsprouts - I'm very sorry to hear the ban your dad subjected you to. I hope you dress the way you want now and i completely agree that people like to twist things.

err....back in Deuteronomy's time, didn't everyone wear a kaftan-like garment?

tissy · 16/12/2008 16:29

I think the overall opinion of you all is to complain even if it isn't permanent.

And another question should i stop wearing the trousers to shut them up or be a rebel?

Usually i'd be a rebel and go against their weird beliefs but unsure in this situation.

You're office is scaring me, have they really brain washed you enough to even consider not wearing trousers?

MorrisZapp · 16/12/2008 17:04

This is bonkers. Women wear trousers all the time, including those of a religious bent.

Anybody telling you not to wear trousers at work should be disciplined.

Take it to HR.

scaryteacher · 16/12/2008 17:04

The Pope should stop wearing a dress then and the cardinals should drop the lace (and the alter boys!).

Tell them that according to St Paul (the great misogynist) '..there is neither Greek nor Jew, male nor female, as we are all one in Christ'.

If they are Christians they are guided by the NT surely, not the OT, as JC came to change the law, not fulfil it?

loobeylou · 16/12/2008 17:05

well, it's nutters like this that give Christians a bad name, just like islamist extremists give Muslims a bad name.Talk about taking things out of context!

Rise above by IGNORING them, unless they are making offensive comments about YOUR religion, then report them to manager

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 17:05

Thanks for pointing that out tiredsvillle. I absolutely WILL wear trousers. But they are, as you have implied, very scary.

Wear the trousers - I am an RE teacher, and I wear them all the time. Tell them female vicars wear trousers and watch them choke on their mugs of tea.

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 17:08

ST have you heard about this trouser issue before?

londontipton · 16/12/2008 17:08

Very surprised they are Catholic - knew a devout lady in Opus Dei (ultra conservative catholic group) who wore jeans and lots of accessories....

Complain to HR for sure, this is a form of bullying.

TheCrackFox · 16/12/2008 17:11

Are you absolutely sure they are Catholics? My mum is very devout and she wears trousers all the time...even, shock horror, to church.

It sounds like bullying and you should take this to HR.

HeadFairy · 16/12/2008 17:14

Definitely rebel against this wierd types, do they believe in creationism too as they're so well versed on the OT?

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 17:15

TheCrackFox -

Well now that everyone is questioning whether they're Catholics is making me doubt myself!

Has your mum ever heard of such thing?
Also is she a typical woman who cooks and cleans etc?

This was in The West Wing; one of my favourtie bits.

NB: The character who says all this is a Catholic and so is Martin Sheen.

I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I have you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophmore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads?

Try this on your tormentors!

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 17:18

HF

Yes they probably do.

combustiblelemon · 16/12/2008 17:20

It's an attitude I might expect from some catholic women in the 70+ age group, but it's not a common one. Even amongst scary fuckers Opus Dei types.

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 17:21

Two are quite old with lots of children and one of them is really pretty (irrelevant but envious) and in her 30's i'd guess.
