loose their jobs and get a chance to see what it is like.

i hope to one day buy a foreclosure.

because it's the only way we stand a chance in hell of ever being able to live in one place for any length of time.

wrinklytum · 12/12/2008 21:24

Agree,2 shoes.BTW I am now all of a tizz what to spend dd's £10 dla "bonus" and dp £10 incapacity benefit "bonus" on

expatinscotland · 12/12/2008 21:25

we got £20 - one for each DLA recipient in the house.

and it's all going to Calor gas, who filled our tank last Tuesday.

ladylush · 12/12/2008 21:25

Don't spend it all at once

Mamazontopofsanta · 12/12/2008 21:27

i agree.

Ds'£10 bonus was barely even noticed.

leoleomakingalist · 12/12/2008 21:27

I think it is stereotyping(?) - many people think that people claiming benefits are all the same.

OptimistS · 12/12/2008 21:28

Actually, what I'd really like to see is the politicians and civil servants who, in their wisdom, set the levels for benefits and minimum wage live off them themselves for a year. A week or whatever isn't long enough. I've never had the misfortune to be benefit dependent, though I've lots of friends who have, and it seems to me that people can just about get by on benefits until something out of the ordinary happens, such as the kids needing new shoes/coat, something essential breaks down, etc and then you're screwed. Trouble is, life being life, these out-of-the-ordinary things happen quite often.

Switchoff · 12/12/2008 21:29

Yes ..... my sister who when dp lost his job at the beginning of the year and was out of work for 6 yes 6 whole weeks made constant comments about her money warming our house up and the food on our fridge been bought by her tax money .

She also constantly complains about the fact we can claim WTC although when she does have a LO I am sure she will not hesitate to claim herself .

TheVirginGoober · 12/12/2008 21:31

That is a bit harsh, I wouldn't wish anybody to lose their jobs. Nor would I express any negative opinions about benefit claimants.

SmallShips · 12/12/2008 21:32

I have a male 'friend' on Facebook, who one day, for a laugh, set his status to is "thinking he has alot of single mothers on his friend list, who are clearly too lazy to work and just want benefits and a free council house"

About 50 raging mums wrote on his wall and he replied to each one saying "well you should get a job", 2 weeks later he lost his job... Oh how they laughed.

Twinklemegan · 12/12/2008 21:34

I agree it's impossible to empathise unless you've been there. We had to go down the housing benefit route after DH lost his job when he did his back in a few years back. We couldn't get income support, so we lived off my student loan. Then of course they overpaid us and caught up with us years later to claw it back. We got to find out just how ridiculous the rules are, how long the delays are, and how blardy hard it is to find a job when you're out of work. It was a real wake up call.

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 12/12/2008 21:35

TheVirginGoober why is it harsh?
according to a lot of people on here, it is a doddle, money for nothing.

findtheriver · 12/12/2008 21:35

Nice....

expatinscotland · 12/12/2008 21:36

'Actually, what I'd really like to see is the politicians and civil servants who, in their wisdom, set the levels for benefits and minimum wage live off them themselves for a year. A week or whatever isn't long enough.'

I'd like to see them make a go of it on minimum wage and WTC+CTC.

That way they get to pay full whack on council tax and get partial or no housing benefit.

For an entire year.

And then have tax credits office tell them they were overpaid.

noonki · 12/12/2008 21:37

of course it is harsh 2shoes. I've been on the dole and it was shite.

I would never wish it upon anyone.

expatinscotland · 12/12/2008 21:38

or have those same politicians and civil servants make £16,000/pa. so they're ineligible for jack shit - no WTC, no free prescriptions or dental care, no council tax benefit, little or no housing benefit.

Twinklemegan · 12/12/2008 21:40

However, I do think there's a difference between people who suddenly find themselves having to claim and people who have always done so. A friend's daughter is pregnant and she has just got a really nice two bed council flat plus a load of furniture, all totally paid for. She could potentially do very well out of it if she never bothered to help herself (I think she will make an effort though). We can't afford new furniture - we still have hand me downs after nearly 10 years of marriage. I think that kind of thing is what gets people's backs up.

christmaseve · 12/12/2008 21:40

Lets face it and just get over this benefit/working debate for once. Non of us are starving yet! Just be proud of that we live in a collective economy. Can we not just live and let live. Everyone does the right thing for their own circumstances.

snigger · 12/12/2008 21:40

Senior civil servants, expat, senior civil servants.

Some of us scrape by further down the ladder...

TheVirginGoober · 12/12/2008 21:40

It is harsh, you know it is.

TheFalconInThePearTree · 12/12/2008 21:44

I don't agree that everyone does the right thing for them and their circumstances.

I've no problem with benefits as a temporary measure or for people who are physically/mentally unable to work but some people choose to remain on benefits with no intention of ever working again. That I strongly object to.

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 12/12/2008 21:45

how odd thet people at me
tbh I don't wish it on most people, only the people who judge. I just think they should give it a try. If you don't judge then I am not talking about you.

AuraofDora · 12/12/2008 21:46

alot of folks will lose their livelihoods, it is happening now, it's happened to us, it aint fun, .. and yes, some of them will be those who moaned and begrudged others on benefits..it will be a life lesson i guess

i personally though wouldn't actively wish it on anyone..

but surely you can see that some people who claim benefits are on the blag...by no means all but some most certainly are. And those are the ones that gets some people's backs up.

In fact you should be annoyed at the blaggers too as they are the ones giving the rest a bad name.
