Repeat, no one is starving yet!

SparklyGothKat · 12/12/2008 21:55

er... 2shoes, am saying this because I lurve you, but the '£10 bonus' thread, the OP wasn't slagging off people on benifits at all.

MistleSQUONKandWine · 12/12/2008 21:55

we claim benefits.

we get job seekers allowance, child tax credits, housing benefit, council tax benefit, child benefit and dd1 gets free school meals.

it sounds like a lot of money coming in. T'isn't.

The only thing that makes it even remotely bearable is that we get a bit every week, and a bit more every fortnight, so when the money runs out, we don't have to wait more than a few days to get some more in.

And some weeks it's only the one night we live on beans on toast.

In my opinion, the government should spend a teensy bit of time and effort chasing some of the super duper tax dodgers and getting them to cough up some of what they owe the economy rather than trying to punish folk who are down on their luck right now (and let's face it, there's going to be a lot more of us around fairly soon....)

Anyway, hey ho...

MistleSQUONKandWine · 12/12/2008 21:55

oh, and we don't get a £10 christmas bonus because none of our benefits qualify us.

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 12/12/2008 21:56

korma, I don't feel got at but do get fed up with the constant judging that goes on. living ao benifits is crap, espicially if your dh HATES not working.
I just often wonder if the people who say it is all so easy have ever done it.
if I told you what it is like for dh when he goes to sign on.....well it is horrid.
yet every week there is a thread about it on here.

When I was doing some research the other day for another thread I was shocked at exactly how much the discrepancy is between the income & entitlements from benefits compared with someone on the minimum wage. It is always banded around that there's little difference, so people are just choosing to live on benefits instead because they're lazy. There's a massive difference, which tells me that no one in their right mind would choose to live their life that way if they had another option. I just wish that message would feed through to the media and politicians.

KittyFloss · 12/12/2008 22:16

I get the feeling that some people on mn (mostly from the underclass thread, but others) regard people who live on benefits etc as a different species, a lesser being, not capable of sentient thought or good deed. Those people I would like to see live a few weeks on benefits.
All this they, them, these people. Makes me sick, as if all people who live on a council estate are exactly the same.

Twinklemegan · 12/12/2008 22:23

And it's not just that KittyFloss - people are bored with just attacking people on benefits. It's anyone claiming tax credits now - particularly if one of a couple is a SAHP or only works p/t (I know it's bad to refer to other threads btw).

ihavenewsockson · 12/12/2008 22:42

in a way we're better off. yes it's hard, and it really is hard.
but it is no shock to the system to budget the money for the week or weigh up all the different options to find out which is more economical.
can you imagine when if we do go into recession, what a complete shock it is gonna be to people who are not used to living on the breadline?!
it prob won't affect us as we're the botton of the food chain anyway.

(at least that's what i keep telling myself!)

MistleSQUONKandWine · 12/12/2008 22:43

(I keep telling myself that as well, IHNSO)

But we can't afford new socks

ihavenewsockson · 12/12/2008 22:45

they're hand me downs

How gross would that be?!

MistleSQUONKandWine · 12/12/2008 22:48

eww!

I saw some Y fronts in the Oxfam shop the other day.

They were hanging on a coat hanger, obviously used (probably clean though, I'll give them that) but it made dp and I decide that no matter how bad things get, we are never buying second hand undies.

Under any circumstances.

Whatsoever

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 12/12/2008 22:49

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

OP posts:
Tn0g · 12/12/2008 22:51

lololoo at them hanging up

how ....strange

MistleSQUONKandWine · 12/12/2008 22:52

they were pinned on one of these

ihavenewsockson · 12/12/2008 22:52

note to all those with the £10 xmas bonus-
do not spend it on second hand undies.

Tn0g · 12/12/2008 23:01

How big were they Squonky?

Were they extra nice Y-fronts or something, designer ones with a logo? I mean, why in the hell would you hang them up?

I'm really pondering on this now.

MistleSQUONKandWine · 12/12/2008 23:04

They were hung up because they were for sale in the charity shop. They hang EVERYTHING up.

They were sort of medium sized, sort of off-white normal looking Y fronts.

I have to confess that I didn't inspect them to see if there was anything special about them, but, as luck would have it, I shall be perusing the self same shop on the morrow, so if they are still for sale (and you know, I kind of hope they are, because if they aren't, then that means that SOMEONE BOUGHT THEM!!!!!) I shall purchase them, have them gift-wrapped and posted to your good self.

(or not )

wrinklytum · 12/12/2008 23:06

Hey Squonky,I ventured into Primark today (bad bad person emoticon). They had undies quite cheap.I bought some for ds....

What about the Tigers,eh?

(Attempts to bring some Christmas cheer!)
