DH & DD skidded off a road into a ditch today

Luckily no major damage to them (car is another matter) but the man who lives in the house where it happened said they were the 6th accident on the same corner in the last 2 weeks!!

Apparently, the brook next to the road has blocked drainage, so covers the corner, freezes & turns the road into a skidpan. It is a 60mph limit!!

DH was only going less than 30mph (sunglare) & didn't sot the (tiny) sign saying slippy road. He went into the ditch & hit a tree.

DD was on her way to a Uni interview too.

DH has just phoned thelocal police to complain & warn them there could be another accident tomorrow.

OMG can you contact the local paper. At least if the story is out there people will be warned even if nothing is done about it!

Ps. SOrry should have said glad your DH & DD are ok.

Milliways · 10/12/2008 18:54

Thanks.

DH has phoned the police who will pass onto Highways Agency, and he will also phone the COuncil & tell our Insurance company this.

If the owner of the house has been taking his dustbin out etc, he would have been run over, and any faster DD would have been seriously injured (she was in front passenger seat - the side that went down the ditch & bonnet into tree).

Not our area, but would have thought the house owner would have contacted paper after 6 crashes into his drive/ditch?

The insurance company will say he was driving too fast for the conditions and it was signposted, sorry.

The sign was tiny & not viewable in the sun glare.

It was a 60mph ans he was down to 25, but said that even under 20mph he would not have had ANY control.

After the crash, he fell over just trying to walk around to the back of the car - complete sheet of black ice.

6 cars in 2 weeks must mean something?

Complain to highways and the relevant local council (in writing even if its email) - get mans name/ address and quote him.

I hope that your not all to shaken up by this. It makes you value what you have.

6 cars in 2 weeks says loads and people (council/ police/ highways) need to get their finger out before there's a fatality.

Get pics of sign before they change it too

Milliways · 10/12/2008 19:11

They took pics of car - not sure about sign. RAC couldn't get car out so they had to leave it (got Taxi home) as had to get other car to take DD to her interview.

Ins co. arranged pick-up & it is now in garage some miles away.

DH spoke to council today & said he wanted to complain to the Highways people as we face an Insurance Excess & loss on no claims etc etc.
They just said "We'll send you a claim form"!

Are you sure it is the council who is responsible for the brook. it might be the environment agency?

Milliways · 11/12/2008 19:33

No doubt they will pass it on if not! They were aware enough to put a tiny sign on the verge, and have visited the site after local complaints on various occassions recently.

Googling the road shows complaints over verges going back 2 years!
