i am fed up of the term hun being used on this site is an example. it is being used to offend people who buy and sell on prams in another thread.

where i come from this term originates (and still stands for) an offensive term a catholic uses to say someone is a protestant.

therefore it is extremely offensive to call me a "pram hun"

why use a word if you dont knows its meaning.

ffs

compo · 03/12/2008 17:29

words have lots of meanings and in your example it is a shortened version of honey spelt hunny

georgiemum · 03/12/2008 17:30

I thought it was short for 'honey'. Or as in 'Atilla the...'

YABU- words have many meanings- eg Bosch- offensive to some, brand name to others.

2AdventSevenfoldShoes · 03/12/2008 17:31

ok
hun

TheProvincialLady · 03/12/2008 17:32

I'm not a catholic and I have no idea whether or not you are protestant. I have no interest in finding out all the derogatory terms people use to offend each other and avoiding them on the off chance. I will stick to common useage thanks.

ToysAreLikeDogs · 03/12/2008 17:32

Oh dearie me

Hun in this context is used to poke fun at those who call each other hun and lol a lot

lol x x x

VinegarTinselTits · 03/12/2008 17:33

Whats your problem Hun?

georgiemum · 03/12/2008 17:33

Is this a UK/regional thing?

I'm an ex-pat and still almost bust a gut when the dentist said he was going to have 'a poke about'.

elmoandella · 03/12/2008 17:33

but surely if its said repeatadly that the term is offending then you would stop using it?

OP posts:
CaptainKarvol · 03/12/2008 17:33

words can have more than one meaning, you know.

Lauriefairycake · 03/12/2008 17:34

It is not being 'used to offend people'. People (like you have) choose to take offense at something.

I suggest you try not to take offense and appreciate the context of what someone is saying - in this case it is a somewhat affectionate term meaning 'honey'.

Tn0g · 03/12/2008 17:35

Yes, Captain, like Smeg.

Gorgeous, retro looking fridges or, erm...something else entirely

elmoandella · 03/12/2008 17:35

so "pram hunning" is a shortened term for honey?

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 03/12/2008 17:36

FFS, I think you are over reacting. One word can have two meanings. Many gay men, for example, smoke fags.

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 03/12/2008 17:36

I take it you don't eat faggot and chips then OP?

georgiemum · 03/12/2008 17:36

I think we need context here!

CaptainKarvol · 03/12/2008 17:36

Smeg will always mean Red Dwarf to me...

VinegarTinselTits · 03/12/2008 17:38

Well i dont think its a catholic term for protestant

Unless they are very religious those sellers

Do you find the word 'pram' offensive?

Lauriefairycake · 03/12/2008 17:39

No, 'hun' means shortened for honey.

The words 'pram hunning' together means something different - either affectionate if you are discussing prams with likeminded people. Or derogatory if you think people into prams are nut jobs.

However it is the two words together that mean something different not the word 'hun' on it's own so you cannot take either protestant or catholic offense.

TrinityRhino · 03/12/2008 17:39

really elmo
you are making yourself look stupid
I was goin to come on here and agree with you because what the title says annoys me too
BUT
your op is just you searching for something to be offended by
I mean come on

if someone said

'I have just been masticating my teethe with my toothbrush' then I might have a serious pedant related twitch going on

because I am sure that they did not mean that they were chewing their teethe with their toothbrush.
I get pissed off with people trying to be clever or just being completely stupid and using the wrong words
BUT HUN IS SHORT FOR HUNNY

DOH

and you know it is

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 03/12/2008 17:40

PMSL at the title being about people using words when they don't understand the meaning, and then not understanding the meaning herself!

TrinityRhino · 03/12/2008 17:40

AND I CAN SPELL TEETH

aaaargh
