If you want to drive round in a mobile ashtray suit yourself but put your bloody fag butts in the car ashtray, don't throw them out of the window. It's gross.

You have to find your fags, light one up and drive, periodically removing hand from steering wheel to take a drag or like my Dad keep it in your mouth the whole time!

Or you can light the fag when stopped at eg traffic lights.

And do you not take your hand off the wheel every few minutes anyway to change gear?

Oh I miss smoking in my car.

I suppose smokers smoking in their car with the windows up is alright as they are keeping the smoke in their own little environment.

Fatti - get over yourself, I am a smoker myself, but I do particularly hate this habit. Smoking is disgusting, it does smell and it does affect other people. Smoker or not it is only reasonable to at least see the truth about it!

I didn't know prisons were exempt! Mind you I hate smoking inside anyway so it doesn't make any difference to me really! (Oh and I don't intend going to prison of course )

YANBU - I have had a hole burnt in my back seat before by this and was really pissed off.
When my Mum smoked she threw one out of the window and it came straight back in and burnt a hole in her collar!
It is dangerous - what if you drop it while driving? If people can get fines for eating/drinking whilst driving, the same should apply to smoking.
Maybe not chop off their hands Sidge - just make them litter pick for a few days but to me, there is no excuse to throw a butt out of a window - minging behaviour.

But I still don't think it is particularly disgusting to throw a fag butt on the street. There are certainly worse social crimes IMO.

I agree there are much worse things, but that doen't stop this being horrid too IYSWIM. If I have smoke on a street (which I don't do often because women shouldn't smoke in the street - don't ask, it was drilled into me as a child) but when I do, I always pick up the butt and find a bin.

Nothing the News of the World would pay for I'm afraid, just drove a friend and me from one party to another. Though he did ask me for a threesome, the sleezy git. That was before he would have discovered the cigarette burn in his leather-seated car of course.

Someone I knew at school was burnt by a cigarrette being chucked out of a passenger window. She was cycling and the lit butt went down the front of her blouse. So no, YANBU.

Why limit it to fag butts - what about all the other crap peolple drop from cars and litter the streets with chewing gum, cans, takeaway stuff etc - give 'em all community service and pick all the stuff up. Don't chop their hands off as they need them to clean up after themselves - dirty feckers

I totally agree. There is no difference to dropping a cigarette out the window then dropping your rubbish on the footpath. Its still littering. It can cause fires (ok not right now), looks ugly and is just inconsiderate.
If people want to smoke in their own cars thats fine but dont litter my space.

My dad, who does smoke a lot and does so while he's driving, says that if eating a mars bar while driving is illegal then smoking should be too. Or neither should be (I think he'd prefer the latter). His reasoning is that if you drop your mars bar you think 'oh dear, bit of chocolate on my jeans'. If you drop a fag you go 'aargh, shit shit, am I on fire?' and that that impedes your driving quite a lot more.
