to be fed up about never having any money even though DH earns (just) over £100k?

I know it sounds like a lot, but with a big mortgage and all the other usual bills we have very little disposable cash.

We don't have a cleaner or any other kind of help

Neither of us has had any new clothes for at least 18 months

We spend £100 a week on groceries, so hardly extravagant

We haven't been on holiday for 3 years

We do all DIY etc ourselves

We've been out twice this YEAR

I just don't know how we can cut back. It feels as though we are working so hard and yet we are always struggling.

It makes me really annoyed when I see comments (for example on that taxing over £150k thread) about the "super rich") - I guess on paper we look "rich" but it certainly doesn't feel like it!

OP posts:

coolma
she just doesn't have the nonce to work it out. bless her.

VictorianSqualor · 27/11/2008 12:49

Oh, also meant to say you can be a 1000% better.
You can use percentage over 100 is it is comparative.

alfiemama · 27/11/2008 12:50

Im sorry Lisalisa, now you I can have sympathy for, must be very upsetting for you
big hugs

hatwoman · 27/11/2008 12:51

re OP - I agree with others (and you!) that your mortgage must be huge. to answer your question aybu to be fed up? well you're human to be feeling fed up but you are where you are because of decisions you took. so live with things as they are, adapt by making some small savings on shopping etc or change the size of your mortgage (ie move). Moving for financial reasons is no fun and has a huge impact on your family and I do find it faintly annoying when people here just say "move" as if they're suggesting changing your shoes. But it seems to me that if you're really fed up then it's an option you should consider.

cheesesarnie · 27/11/2008 12:51

i agree with xenia.

if its possible op how about a job?would that help-even if it was only enough to pay for weekly shop?

i do think theres been a few unfair assumptions about op's lifestyle-'buying bags' and her childrens education.
and i also think op has been very brave!

BalloonSlayer · 27/11/2008 12:51

Sometimes with the big salaries comes the need to look the part...

What do you spend on cars, OP?

I was looking at a car showroom the other day and saw one of those massive fuck-off four wheel drive things. It was used and it was priced at £52,000 [shock}.

I was at a loss to think who might spend that on a car.

But I guess if you have a glamorous high-paid job you might feel you need one.

There are lots round where I live.

EachPeachPearMum · 27/11/2008 12:52

headfairy with base rate as low as 3% now- overpaying mortgage is not actually the best thing to do- put that money in a high interest account (ISA, or web saver- around 6%) that is better return, assuming your mortgage isn't a high fixed rate that is.

hatwoman · 27/11/2008 12:53

sorry lisalisa - I shouldn't have been flipant. whatever per cent it is that's a tuogh pay cut to take.

susie100 · 27/11/2008 12:54

To the op - can you break down your monthly spending and we can try and help you out. You should be able to re-mortgage soon to a lower rate (they are slowly coming down!)

Or could you get a job, even part time? Having 2 incomes makes such a difference in my view and less pressure on your DH in tough times

clumsymum · 27/11/2008 12:54

I'm with Coolma.

If I was paying 40K to someone who didn't realise what "200% pay cut" actually meant, I'd drop thier pay by 3/4 too.

(I do sympathise Lisa, really)

clumsymum · 27/11/2008 12:55

DOH "their pay" sorry

elliott · 27/11/2008 12:57

lisalisa - if you have read the thread you will see that there is a lot of about people on big incomes claiming skintness (not to mention and ) - I read your post on here (and your new thread) as implying that you were earning more than £100k, but now think this may have been a misunderstanding.
But I think if you are really going further and further into debt you may have to ditch the school fees. But knowledge is power, so you really need to get clarity about where it is going.

Oblomov · 27/11/2008 12:58

i don't agree with those saying op has no right to complain. just because some of our posters struggle to get by.
she has the right to complain if she wants.
oh i am pissed off because......my boobs aren't as pert as they were pre ds1.
i am pissed off because ds2 is a nightmare. ds1 was a deam.
i am pissed off because some dimwit , like cheryl cole earns a fortune.
oh come on. humour me. we're all allowed a moan.
its all relative. you can't afford a tummy tuck, you can't afford.. a loaf of bread. all relative.

lisalisa · 27/11/2008 12:58

Well then I'm glad neither clumsymum nor coolma employ me then .

Next time I'll ensure I check statistics and percentages with a calculator before posting.

And clumsymum might want to check her dictionary for spelling mistakes before posting next time too. Sauce for goose and all that..........

Lizzylou · 27/11/2008 13:01

Oh Lisalisa, what an awful position.
I work in legal recruitment and there have a been a few stories from candidates recently about being told "it's a pay cut or redundnacy".
Are there any other (better paid) jobs going in your field? Is there any possiblity for you/DH to take on another job?

Lizzylou · 27/11/2008 13:02

redundancy

lisalisa · 27/11/2008 13:02

Oh I see she has already done that ....keep it to hand for next time won't you Coolma- it's very necessary if you're going to make barbs about others' mathematical ability especially if those others didn't realise they were under a theoretical microscope. Just in case you get a tit for tat.....

Bet you didn't get 4 Grade A A'Levels though did you now ? Nerrrrrr nerrrrr nerrrr.......

[lisalisa sticks out tongue and makes rude gesture]

lisalisa · 27/11/2008 13:03

I wonder if I know you lizzylou?

Nothing out there at the moment - commercial property - first in firing line.....

SilentTerror · 27/11/2008 13:05

Whilst I understand that £100k is alot of money, and that many posters are rightly p*ssed off, especially in these uncertain times,I do have some sympathy with OP.
Our income is £100k,but after tax, national insurance comes out and pension it is not mega rich, although it may seem so.
We have small mortgage compared to income(mortgage £100k),as we bought a good few years ago thankfully, but no way do we feel 'rich'.
However,I do appreciate we are many many times more fortunate than most.

Lizzylou · 27/11/2008 13:07

I'm up North, I do have a position for a Com Prop Sol up here!
It's bizarre having just got back into this after a few years out, when I left to have DS1, Com Prop and Residential Conveyancers were so sought after and commanding such high salaries......
Are you registered with any agencies where you live? There may be openings, you know, I was amazed when a client said they were looking to expand Com Prop.

He he he, heres a question, ah but what is rich?

Is it having a wad of money to buy what you want?
Is it having a huge house?
Or is it having a beautiful family who love very much

girlsnightout · 27/11/2008 13:15

You're on a hiding to nothing I'm afraid. I fail to see how you can be struggling when so many of us are having to manage on a hell of a lot less. Cutting your cloth to suit your means springs to mind.

solo · 27/11/2008 13:23

Could it be all of the above alfiemama?!

solo · 27/11/2008 13:28

I've just put patches on the inner thighs of my jeans as they had completely worn through. They aren't designer jeans and they are about 5 years old and worn a lot. That makes me feel very poor!
My Dd has shot up and all her tops are too short now. I felt quite embarrassed in the doctors waiting room yesterday. I was thinking of ways to lengthen them, maybe by putting a false layer at the hem. See, very poor!
Ds isn't too bad. His cousin had outgrown most of his clothes, so my Ds has benefited there.
