To think DH shouldn't use the dog as a hot water bottle?

DH is refusing to turn the heating on saying its too expensive to run. His argument is that we can squeeze the dog when we get cold. I just wrap a blanket around me but he gets the dog and cuddles him really hard to keep warm, if the dog struggles, DH tells him off.

Shouldn't we just bite the bullet and put the heating on like everyone else? AIBU to think this is unfair to the dog?

That furry thing you see laying on my feet is not the dog, honest its not its a, erm, a, well its not the dog it just looks like her

Why not buy a real hot water bottle? From experince dogs do stay still and then you get cold toes.

EsmeWeatherwax · 26/11/2008 14:19

I used to use my cats as mobile hot water bottles when I lived in a flat with no heating. Had one puddled over my feet and the other one just got rearranged depending on what bits were coldest. They were very obliging about it.

YANBU cats are much better at the job.

dougal3 · 26/11/2008 15:16

YACR - It is really, really cold today. Switch on the heating. Tell dh the dog did it. If he argues, tell him that extreme cold induces hallucinations and give him a scarey, mad stare, or a good squeeze.

Tell him about fleas and worms...

OrmIrian · 26/11/2008 15:32

My cat is my pillow. I don't ask her to be she just volunteers for the job.

But no, I think providing blanket duties should be part-time and voluntary.

My dh used to have our dog lie on top of him. Our dog was elderly (she died aged 15 this year). Anyway, one day our dog was snoozing on top of dh, and needed to have a wee. She obviously couldnt be bothered to get off dh to go out, so she started to wee on him!!!Exit one flying dog.

Me and dd thought it was hiliarious, but dh had a sense of humour failure.

YABU. Hot-water bottle is one of many ways our dogs earn their keep. The list also includes teddy bear, draught excluder, hoover, teething chew for little Ff (Girldog's ear), pillow, agony aunt...they're smashing

prettybutterfly · 26/11/2008 16:42

Yanbu! You dpn't need it on 24/7 but you do need it on a bit so you don't get damp and ill.

Put the dog DOWN!

more · 26/11/2008 16:48

Why don't you offer to be his "hot waterbottle"

Lovesdogsandcats · 26/11/2008 16:51

My dog also sleeps with me so YABU.

Although I have never had the heating on at night when in bed, never needed it as the quilt keeps us all warm enough.

I think your dh is BU in only having the dog in bed when HE is cold, does the poor dog get turfed out in the summer then?
