I have got alot of people coming over next Saturday for Pre Christmas drinks and just a get together some of the people that are coming are coming from Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire.
I live in and London and they have booked Hotel rooms sorted out there travel etc, The problem being is I don't feel to have a party my very close cousin is in Hospital in itensive care and the last thing I want to do is have a drink up.

So basically AIBU to cancel the party as people have made plans to come down?

no, but give as much notice as possible, and perhaps say why.

there is lots to do in london, sell it as an opportunity to do xmas shopping to those who are staying.

perhaps you could eat lunch out with those travelling in a long way - stops you from having to cater, they still get to see you, not a huge piss up.

Thanks Rempy I will speak to them. I know some will be funny about it.

I dont think anyone will mind as long as you give them an explanation.

You might find it easier if you e-mail them (But make sure you get read receipts so you know everyone has had it)rather than repeat yourself several times on the phone, or alternatively se if another family member can phone some as well.

Hope things get better with your cousin.

I think if you provide them with an explanation you'll be fine - just do it soon so they can cancel any hotel rooms if necessary but I disagree with Lowfat - a cancellation like this can't be left to email. What if they don't get their messages often and then lose money on the hotel.

I think a personal phone call is the only way to go!!!
