First day as a SAHM today (gave up work last week - boss don't know yet - have thrown a sickie until find the guts to tell them ).

DH agrees with me staying at home as stuff just does not get done with us both out all day (3 DCs, all at school) and I hate my job!!

Anyway found Mumsnet a few weeks ago and am ADDICTED . All I have done today (in between taking kids to school and picking up) is

load dishwasher
empty the dustbin
empty all the dirty washing from baskets and sort into piles (put one lot on)
take cleaning stuff for bathrooms from cupboard and put on bottom stair with hoover (finally put it away unused at 5.00pm)

Am a complete failure and Mumsnet is to blame!! I was planning to change all the bedsheets, clean bathrooms and downstairs loo, hoover upstairs and mop floors down, attack the 6ft pile of ironing gathering dust in the corner of our bedroom, clean all the windows, do a big shop at Tescos and prepare a wholesome meal for the family (they ended up with fishfingers and oven chips).

Please tell me how to overcome this or DH will put me back to work .

YANBU - I'm sposed to be marking essays. The education and moulding of young minds is suffering and it's all because of MN

Goober · 24/11/2008 22:02

There is no cure.
I'm so very sorry.

BlueBumedFly · 24/11/2008 22:04

YANBU, sposed to be writing my book to save me from the hell that is work...

swanriver · 24/11/2008 22:04

Go to the fly thread in goodhousekeeping. It combines blogging with housework. In fact it turns blogging into a form of housework.

hecate · 24/11/2008 22:05

hi there squishy

yes, it should be banned. Or perhaps we should be slowly weaned off it with a mumsnet substitute...

How to combat it? Pick up the worst of the crap throughout the day. 10 minutes before he is due home, drag the hoover into the middle of the room. Spray the air with polish and dampen the front of your hair with a bit of water. Then when you see his car, get to the sink and start washing pots.

(I am kidding of course, before the feminists demand my details from MNHQ and come after me with pitchforks )

Oh, and squishy? - say bye bye to the life you knew, cos there is no way out of here...

MrsThierryHenry · 24/11/2008 22:06

Squishy, I am wondering how you have managed to leave your job without telling your boss?!!

Also - MN has no cure. Nor a vaccine. It's a life sentence. But a fun one!!

littleboyblue · 24/11/2008 22:06

Hehehe. It's very easy to get addicted. I don't get much done either.

((waves to Goober))

thumbwitch · 24/11/2008 22:09

Banned? nooo, bad plan!
HOWever, I do think it should be like tv was in the old days, only on for certain hours in the day and then on testcard for the rest. That way we could all leave and get some work done for a few hours, and then get back to it later.

LeakyDAISYcal · 24/11/2008 22:09

all you have done.......all

I consider myself to have had a productive day if I even manage to load the dishwasher, never mind do all that other stuff.

Call yourself addicted

SlartyBartFast · 24/11/2008 22:09

i think i have cured my addiction when i have a night off,
but the next night, i have sucumbed again.

mumof2andabit · 24/11/2008 22:12

I look at my messy house, the piles of dirty clothes and then the computer and mumsnet calls me..............domestic blogger sound any good?

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 24/11/2008 22:13

Bad luck, SquishyButt.

Tis like the Hotel California round here

BlackEyedDog · 24/11/2008 22:13

firstly send your bosses a nice letter explaining that you have found a new occupation as a contributor on Mumsnet.

use the dead time between 9am and 9.40am to race around picking things up and cramming them in cupboards.

start threads along the lines of; do I really need to iron?

buy basics and no-frills foodstuffs so you can afford a cleaner once a week.

enjoy!

theSuburbanDryad · 24/11/2008 22:16

That would be a very productive day for me.

SquishyButt · 24/11/2008 22:25

Quickly scrambled upstairs and shoved all the dirty washing back in the baskets when I heard his key in the door - pheww. Was a bit redfaced thank god!!

DD had to eject me from the computer chair to do her homework . Was not happy though - shall make a placard tomorrow with I SHALL NOT BE MOVED (if I find time).

Thumbwiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch!

Actually, I have nothing more to add to this thread, I just wanted to say hi to thumbwitch!

thumbwitch · 24/11/2008 22:41
  • we are getting bad at hijacking aren't we?
MrsThierryHenry · 26/11/2008 09:58

I know, I know! It's becoming a very bad habit!

onthewarpath · 26/11/2008 10:16

YANBU . I have now decided to MN when Bfeeding DD4 only as she takes her time, and feeds often!!

TheMuppetMuggle · 26/11/2008 10:22

There is no cure - i'm supposed to be writing my essay.

VictorianSqualor · 26/11/2008 10:33

The secret is to not keep the pooter on.
Sit down for a length of time (say 5 hours?) and then when you get up.
TURN IT OFF.
Turning it back on again takes more effort than just sitting back down.

Hecate you just described my life

Lowfat · 26/11/2008 10:41

Sorry as others have said - there is no cure.

The trick is not to switch the PC on at all! Untill you have time to spend on it.

I was addicted like you when I first discovered MN.

However since then I have found FB too and becaome addicted to that more.

Now I have overdosed on both and only dip in and out for a few times a week or when I really need advice/support as MN is a great place for that

MorrisZapp · 26/11/2008 18:00

Here's a tip. Spray some kind of cleaning fluid on your telephone.

Then next time DH uses the phone, he'll smell it and think, blimey - her cleaning is thorough!

I heard that tip from Paul O'Grady talking about when he used to clean houses.

Actually, my DP would probably think I was insane to polish the phone.

YANBU.

glaskhamhasoneintheoven · 26/11/2008 18:27

DEFINATLEY NBU..... i found mumsnet about 7mths ago..... my house has gone into uncleaned turmoil since...

Luckily i'm now pg and suffering from sickness, so DH doesn't expect too much from me atm.... what the hell am i gonna use after the baby arrives???????

My daily list of jobs has now halved due to having to fit in MN... today all i've done is stripped the kids beds, washed their sheets and put new sheets on... put another washer load on and dried it... washed the pots and cooked tea for the DC's... currently wondering if i can get away with a take-away instead of doing roast chicken for when DH gets in from work

SalBySea · 26/11/2008 18:32

it should automatically block you for 24 hours if you exceed an hour on here. I need to tidy the sitting room but "just another few minuites" becomes hours
