It is fine, so long as your kids do not mind. I say this because my youngest brother (youngest of 4) wore clothes that 3 older siblings and a friend's child had worn - also many of these clothes came from jumble sales anyway. He was embarassed about it (at the age of 5) as the condition was not great! Anyway some of the childrens pjs on eBay are new with tags anyway I would imagine.

cheesesarnie · 24/11/2008 15:15

i wouldnt buy them ones that said 'faded' etc.

I buy second hand clothes all the time - in fact I am currently wearing boots and jumper, both from ebay. My DDs also have lots of second hand clothes (ebay, hand-me-downs, charity shops, nct sales etc).

I could probably get most of it new if I really wanted to, but I don't see the point.

It is fine, fine to get the pjs from e-bay. I doubt very much your DCs will notice.

And it is more environmentally friendly.

And (and I like this one the best) tell your DH with the money you are saving on the pjs you can buy something nice for him!

cheesesarnie · 24/11/2008 15:17

everything i ow is second hand i think and dc.he just doesnt think its ok at xmas.

Nothing wrong with it at all, but if you do decise that you want to get new ones the Tesco and George at Asda are reasonable and this site has been recommended to me by friends www.kids-pyjamas.co.uk/

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 24/11/2008 15:25

dd will be getting a couple of nightdresses I picked up from a car boot sale this summer!

thumbwitch · 24/11/2008 15:29

when I was little a fair few of my clothes came from jumble sales etc. - so long as the condition is ok and they are not hopelessly old, I think it is ok.
How old are your DC?

I buy loads of 2nd hand clothes. I think I'm quite proud about it actually. I'd draw the line at underwear (obviously) - although I did overhear a customer in a charity shop asking for white y-fronts! so some people don't!

I'd also draw the line at gifts for anyone outside the family.

cheesesarnie · 24/11/2008 15:43

8,7 and almost 3.

No.

noonki · 24/11/2008 15:47

My kids have only ever had new clothes as presents from friends, and tbh if they were second hand I wouldnt care in the least.

DSS is 12 and thinks it is good to get 2nd hand as it's recycling which he is really into.

Joanna1980 · 24/11/2008 15:49

Not at all. Good quality second hand things are brilliant, far better than primark tat.

And of course they are pjs, not outside clothes, so other DC aren't going to see them very often, if at all, so no perceived stigma by the DC there. I think it is fine for your own DC - but I agree with stickybeaker that I wouldn't do it for anyone outside the family (not that you were suggesting that, cheesesarnie )

flubdub · 24/11/2008 15:52

blimey Iwishiwasmoreorganised - that website is really cheap!!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/11/2008 15:57

I know! Funnily enough I've never got round to ordering from them though! My mn name rings true yet again!

wotulookinat · 24/11/2008 16:07

Our local market does lovely pjs - the thicker sort of ones, and they are £3.99 or £4.99. Other than that I buy most of them second hand - I would prefer second hand good quality stuff anyway.

smugmarried · 24/11/2008 16:13

They are £3 in primark, could you go there.

RedSparklersOnHerHead · 24/11/2008 16:18

we're struggling at the moment, and until last week I had only 2 pairs of trousers (both jeans) - anyway, last week one of them ripped where the pocket is on the back, leaving me with a hole on my ass! So I had been wearing the same pair of jeans every day (washing them in the evening and drying them overnight when they needed cleaning) and wearing them again the next day.

Looking on Ebay on Sat and I said to DH - do you mind if i bid on a £2 pair of jeans ending in 6 mins? - He was unbelievably against me wearing second hand clothes! To the point where I tried to get him to tell my WHY I shouldn't buy them... "you don't know who's been wearing them" was all he could say! I will wash them though!!! He wouldn't let me get them - we debated it for longer than the 6mins and the auction had ended by that point so i missed out on a really nice pair of jeans. He ended up giving me money to buy some.

I was so though! I see nothing wrong in wearing second hand clothes.

There's nothing wrong with buying them if you ask me - just don't ask my DH.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/11/2008 16:25

RSOHH - I wouldn't ask in future! Just get bidding and tell a small white lie when he asks where somehing came from - it might have come to you from e-bay but could have been from next originally

littlelamb · 24/11/2008 16:34

God NO! Me and the dc would be lost without charity shop clothes! Some people can be snobby about it but you can pick up some ubelievable things in them, and there is a brilliant one (the Heavitree Fore Street one Momma, the Tardis as we call it) where most of the furniture in our living room has come from as well as some fantastic vintage throws which are keeping us all warm and so saving on the heating! DD has some fabulous Osh Kosh dresses that cost about 50p each that will be passed on once she's finished with them and should be good for years to come. I'd rather pay for good second hand stuff than tat from Primark anyday (nothing against Primark btw, but you know what I mean)

wotulookinat · 24/11/2008 16:37

I bought DS primark pjs once, but the top was waaaaaaayyyyy too small. it should have been 18-23 but was more like 9-12m! That was around the torso - but the arms were normal length.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 24/11/2008 16:39

Almost all dc's toys and xmas prezzies are from car boot sales - to be fair at 4 and 2 and newborn our children do not yet care.

It is insane imo to buy babies and young children all their clothes new - baby clothes are hardly worn long enough to get worn out - I am buying more new stuff for ds now he has started school but I still look for stuff for him in charity shops etc.

Just be very choosy about what you buy - I have a fantastic purple corduroy John Rocha winter coat for dd1 and it cost me £1! What is there not to love about that? especially in these cash strapped times!

AmIWhatAndWhy · 24/11/2008 16:52

Red sparklers, next time don't ask, just buy.
