well, only going by my KIds now....but whist packagingetc..would not mkae any difference adn they would take me by my word...if things aren't in a "fit" condition, i.e. fading/ severe...totally severe...bobbing or of course rips and tears would be appparent they might say something...

YANBU. My mate checks out the charity shops all the time. Saying that she's a beanpole that would look great in a binliner. Think I will have a look soon.

Me too, not a sausage!
Well, it's lovely to see you!

It always make me laugh when people don't buy 2nd hand because "you don't know who's been wearing them." I mean, in a shop most items have been tried on so when does an item become "2nd hand" I am 2nd hand top to toe and thus wear better quality clothes than I could ever afford.

wotulookinat · 27/11/2008 09:51

And that's what washing machines are for!

mrsmalumbas · 27/11/2008 09:54

I would love to wear second hand but don't seem to have much luck finding it. I do go in the charity shops and there are quite a few around where I live but they always seem to be full of polyester "slacks" and worn out fleeces. Any tips for getting a good bargain girls? I have also not had much success with e-bay, thing look okay in the photo but when they arrive they are not very nice. Even if they only cost a few pounds it then seems a waste of money.

wotulookinat · 27/11/2008 10:03

On Ebay, make sure that you have a look at the seller's feedback and only buy from good sellers.
Have you tried charity shops in different areas? I go to some in a rather affluent area instead of ones near me! There is nicer stuff in the nicer areas

jeee · 27/11/2008 10:24

Mrsmalumbas, the secret of charity shop shopping is to find the best ones, go in regularly, and enjoy it. You won't find what you want in the first shop, and you have to have an open mind. But nearly all my clothes are charity shop bargains, and I really don't think I look like they are (though I proudly tell everyone that they come from charity shops). I'm still sulking that I let a beautiful boden coat go, though. I was having a bad day, didn't try it on, and then saw it (looking stunning) on a friend at the school gates.

wotulookinat · 27/11/2008 10:38

Yeah, go regularly, and buy something when you see it. I saw a great handbag the other week and ummed and ahhed and when I went back it had gone. Gutted.

Bramshott · 27/11/2008 10:54

The DC's and I are regularly top to toe in second hand clothes. Quite apart from the money savings, it is much, much more ethical to buy second hand. If the quality was good, and would have no qualms about giving second hand clothes to the DDs for Christmas (or toys come to that).

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 10:56

nope, we all wear second hand in this house. I love charity shopping and also ebaying. I keep the dc's clothes and when dc 3 has finished using them will re-sell back on ebay.

ohIdoliketobebesidethe · 27/11/2008 11:02

Our dc clothes are second hand or presents from relies. I gave up buying new because it seemed so wasteful. They are also getting some second hand christmas presents. (We have lots of second hand shops where I live).

This is despite our household income being top 2% in UK.

I don't see anything wrong with buying second hand.

muppetgirl · 27/11/2008 11:06

ohIdo - same here. I would rather the money went into savings at the mo.

I buy a lot from ebay, admittedly clothes from monsoon, gap ect as once both ds's have used them (and hopefully dc 3 when they arrive) then I'll put them back on as I take good care of them and as we all know, they don't wear them out do they?

Sputnik · 27/11/2008 12:26

I buy loads of stuff second hand off market stalls (no charity shops in the country where I live). You have to rummage but I have found really nice good quality stuff for 2 or 3 euros. For example the other day I found a pure wool zip through for DS, really nice and people have commented on how smart it is. I could have bought an acrylic one for 15 or 20 euros new on a neighbouring stall that would've looked crap after a couple of washes.

So for me it's a way of getting nice stuff I couldn't justify spending on new.
