Nearly all DS's clothes are from ebay. No toddlers clothes get worn for more than about six months and besides there is much more choice on ebay than in the shops. I've got loads of gorgeous monsoon and osh kosh clothes on there, I never spend more than a fiver on anything apart from coats - and shoes (which I get new)

2point4kids · 24/11/2008 17:04

Nothing wrong with it normally and nothing wrong at xmas if children are too yong to realise the difference.
If they are older children and its a once a year present and they are used to wearing 2nd hand all the rest of the time it will mean a lot to get a new pair I am sure.

Look at that link someone posted kidspyjamas
its really good value stuff, I've boght from there before

cheesesarnie · 24/11/2008 17:06

I buy loads of clothes for my children from ebay. Nothing wrong with it at all. i adore monsoon for dd but am not prepared to pay the shop prices. I get then from ebay and then re sell them on...

ilovejonty · 24/11/2008 17:28

I think ebay is great for children's clothes, and some adults' stuff for that matter. There are some great bargains out there and some really nice sellers if you're picky.

Why pay - say - £25 for something new in a shop when you can get it for £5 or less (hardly worn in great condition)?? A n o brainer for me.

lovecat · 24/11/2008 19:02

YANBU at all - I love Monsoon & Boden but there is no way in Hell I can afford their prices - everything I possess (pretty much) is via eBay!

FuriousGeorge · 24/11/2008 21:21

YANBU,my children rarely get 'new' clothes, and mine are nearly all preloved too.

RedSparkler,if your DH goes on again 2nd hand stuff being worn by someone else, ask him how many times a 'new' pair of jeans in a shop may have been tried on before someone eventually buys them?

blithedance · 24/11/2008 21:32

DS was given a bag of clothes from a slightly older cousin including a few pairs of pyjamas, and he likes those soft worn-and-washed ones the best - "the comfortable ones Mummy".

The only thing I wouldn't buy is PJ's and undies, you can get 2 pairs for a tenner in Mothercare with Christmas print on them too.

mytetherisending · 24/11/2008 23:04

YANBU! I have 2 dds and both get 2nd hand clothes. Why spend excessive amounts of money on clothes for children when they grow so fast. I have just bought 30 items in good condition from ebay for my 8mth old who has just gone into 12-18mth clothes!!! Cost 40 quid. I also kitted out my 2yo about 2mths ago with 2-3 jeans etc but she has now outgrown them. Imagine how peeved I would be if I had paid a fortune for them I do draw the line at underwear though.

mytetherisending · 24/11/2008 23:06

I got a lovely coat for both dds off ebay for 7 and 5 quid! Both next and one with hat and mits!

kitbit · 24/11/2008 23:29

I always buy ds's jeans and summer shirts on ebay. What 4 year old totally wears out their jeans and cotton shirts? They're as good as new. He has 3 pairs of gap jeans for this winter, total price for the lot 5 quid. I especially like the gap ones cos they seem to be his shape. It's good recycling too.
Last year I bought him 2 pairs of pjs, they were brand new but without the tags and they had never been worn. I think 2 pounds each pair, or something. One pair was Mothercare and the other were Gap thermals and both were as new and gorgeous.

Yes, I also draw the line at undies, and socks I buy new as I love the feel of soft new socks and old ones go bobbly and stiff.

Not a problem if you ask me!

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 11:00

but katie why?

i just got 2 pretty cushions from ebay delivered today but i have to tell dh there from eleswhere.theyre beutiful laura ashley ones which id never afford if not 2nd hand!.

and i went for it and got ds2 pjs!still looking for ds1.

we dont have mothercare, primark etc -infact any shops!so even though it might be 2 for £10 or £3 each after paying for either petrol or bus journey its an extra £10 atleast.

Order online, via linemypocket or another cash back site, get 10% off and probably free delivery too and that bring the price down to £4 a pair ?
I guess it's being next to the skin, I don't like the thought it's been on somebody else's baby's skin, that's just me, I'm odd in many ways I know.

Gateau · 25/11/2008 12:39

I don't buy any of my Ds's clothes secondhand. But people can do what they want.
I don't like him wearing secondhand clothes - I think they often look a bit shabby (but that's just me!) and I don't think there's a need to buy them with so many cheap, good quality clothes and sales around.

TheLadyEvenstar · 25/11/2008 12:48

I refuse to buy new clothes for ds's ds1 is 10 and you can be sure that he will get them muddy, grass stains etc within days of buying them and ds2 is only 14m old and growing rapisly still. I have just bought ds1 a bundle of clothes off of another site for £15 there are reebok and other name brands there,
I have also just bought ds2 2 pairs of jeans for £2.50 and some tops.
I also buy all of ds2's nappies 2nd hand....

This xmas I have bought ds1 lots of things from another site for xmas not all of them new and also the same for ds2 including a v'smile for £10 which includes 5 games.

I think money is over rated lol. I like to buy a lot for a little when it comes to everyday life and xmas.

Go with what you want to do DC don't notice anyway they have so much fun opening the presies that as long as they have what they want they are happy IMO

blueshoes · 25/11/2008 12:51

Secondhand is great for sending dcs to nursery with. They thrash their clothes so much whilst having fun and getting messy.

There is no need for second hand to be shabby, even on eBay. Just look for those that say 'lightly worn', VGC or even 'new' from sellers with good feedback. Avoid listings with words like 'my son's favourite jacket'!

Denim and corduroy generally wear well and so the condition is likely to be good, even if well worn. Some brands wear better than others. If you cannot tell the condition from the photo, don't buy. Easy.

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 13:12

katie your odd in a lovely way though.

Gateau-do my dc look shabby?

OP posts:
Gateau · 25/11/2008 13:17

Yep.

Gateau · 25/11/2008 13:18

Seriously, I don't know cheesesarnie, or care.
I am only interested in what my DS wears.

ooh cheesesarnie...couldn't resist clicking on your profile when you asked if your kids looked shabby (no they don't, they look wonderful!) ...but I think I recognise the wedding pics from your profile on another parenting forum where I also used to post!

Oh God you'll think I'm a loony stalker now, really I'm not! If it is you, just glad to see a familiar face! (I used to post as "broccoli")

Woollymummy · 25/11/2008 23:02

Hand-me downs from lovely friends are great, as they can be the ones that I don't cry over when daubed with bolognese sauce. I have been known to put DD into a red top just before pasta dinner...

Second-hand gives you a choice of styles that you can't get in shops, retro for kids I guess.

Charity shop is great for baby stuff, as they get through so many sizes so quick, you don't have to worry about co-ordinating outfits if they are bundled up in uggy on a long walk etc, and it makes your soul feel good to support fave charity shops

Most new stuff is from well meaning mother in law who proabably feels we need charity ourselves
