there was a LIVE MAGGOT in the top of my Sainsburys flour

As I was unwrapping the packet, I noticed it. It was folded into the wrapping.
I took it back, in a polythene bag, still very much alive.
The girl at customer services was young, and very proper; she didn't say sorry, but asked me what I wanted to do about it, apart from being given a new bag of flour.

I pointed out ( politely) that I had been making cauliflour cheese, so had wasted all my ingredients, - butter, cheese, milk ( organic.....) but the main pint was that I wanted to know where the maggot had come from, because I thought they were usually around meat/cheese, not dry goods.
She kept saying- "there are things you can get in flour"
"- Yes- weevils, but not maggots" I said.

Anyway, she said she could give me £10 "goodwill" for my ingredients and that would be the end of it, or she could send it off to see it's origin ( not sure how on earth they can do that)

I opted for the sending off option; i would like to know whereb the flour was in Sainsburys, or a depot or whatevr, that a live maggot can get into it.

Gave my name, address, phone etc, and have heard NOTHING. It was three weeks ago I think, at least.
I'm about to check the dates and ring them, because I'm not impressed.....

EEEUUUUWWWW!

Go and ring them!

Jackstini · 24/11/2008 08:28

Def ring them - I would have wanted the 10 quid as well.

cupsoftea · 24/11/2008 08:29

Why can't they refund you & also check the origin?

plumandolive · 24/11/2008 08:32

my hand hovered over the tenner...
But they'll probably give me a voucher as an apology- AT LEAST!. Maybe a years free supply of cauliflour cheese too.

The girl at customer services asked me if I'd been ill- they have to ask in case someone gets e coli or something I suppose. I said I hadn't even eaten it, but felt sick just looking at it.
She wasn't the brightest of sparks....

cups- I wondered that. But I'm just cross that they still haven't got in touch- very poor customer services I'd say.

Oh- and she did give me new bag of flour. but I'd wasted the other ingredients which were more of course, because I'd spooned a bit in as I saw the maggot squirming in the wrapper.

plumandolive - think it could take up to a month for you to get a response.

I had a problem with ASDA - in my bagged salad there was some green plastic.

ASDA did explain to me that it would take about a month because of the process they had to go through (they did find out where the green plastic had come from though).

..at least it wasn't a "buy one get one free" offer.

Crappy customer service though.

cupsoftea · 24/11/2008 10:25

this is a health issue - a live maggot makes you wonder what other yuck is behind the scenes.

plumandolive · 24/11/2008 10:30

bellavita- thanks for that- I suppose if they're investigating it properly, it could take that long.

cupsof- well exactly. That's what my main issue is really. I thought maggots were only around rotting meat, which meansd the flour must have been near something unspeakeable.
Having been a waitress when I was a student, I know some of the horrors in restaurant kitchens, and imagine now there could be a similar thing in supermarkets or depots.

Being such a huge concern though, Sainsburys should know better.
