To be really annoyed with my SIL

My DH brother and his wife live in California, like us they have two DD who are a similar age to our DDs. Now they usually come over in July to visit they spend 2-3 days with us and then they go to her family for four weeks. Her family live a 6hr drive away. Anyway we arranged that we would visit them next summer so we found a good deal with the flights if we left at the end of June, leaving the uk in July was going to cost an extra £1000! So we emailed them to let them know and to confirm as we really wanted to book these cheaper flights....So SIL has emailed back, apparently she told her sister about these cheaper flights and they are now coming out at that time.....So we wouldnt be able to visit as the same time as them. She said we could always come over in Sept or Oct....My DD1 starts school in Sept so its not an option.I am really annoyed we always grateful for them visiting us but often do feel that it is really a courtesy call.

Wow, that does seem to be very unkind, you do the leg work in finding the cheaper flights and then she uses the info for her family.

Has your dh spoken to his db about this?

YANBU, i would not go at all now if i were you

OonaghBhuna · 19/11/2008 16:11

They havent spoken yet but I think DH will have a word with him. Its put me off going so I think we will be looking at family holidays in Europe now.

YANBU, not very nice thing to do at all.

Upwind · 19/11/2008 16:15

YANBU I would not go now and would explain to your DB why

compo · 19/11/2008 16:29

it might be all a big misunderstanding
just be glad you don't have to spend your holiday visiting her
don't cause a huge row if you can help it

LouMacca · 19/11/2008 16:43

yanbu. how rude! especially when you had already arranged to go in the summer. i would be annoyed too.

AnguaVonUberwald · 19/11/2008 16:48

How increadibly rude of her, did she attempt to justify this is any way?

HelensMelons · 19/11/2008 18:04

I think it's pretty obvious that SIL has suited herself. She, perhaps, doesn't realise that she has hurt your feelings as much as she has. She has maybe forgotten that DD1 will be starting school - so she mightn't realise that the September option is out for you.

There are two options really, aren't there?

Either you go to California and make your own arrangements regarding accommodation.

Or you just make alternative arrangements and go on a family holiday elsewhere that is nice and sunny that you know that you'll enjoy.

I would look upon this situation, as a lucky escape!

Families, eh!
