To wear a dress when sister wants me to wear trousers?

There is a presentation night coming up. We (me, my sister (14), my mum and my two boys) are all going.

Originally, I didn't realise it was a "posh do" with suits and dresses, so I said I would be wearing black trousers with a nice top. My sister said she would wear the same.

Tonight I found out it was a proper dressing up affair...I told my mum that all of the 14 year olds were wearing dresses, as were the women. My mum said "oh, well..you're not are you? because Sarah (my sis) won't wear a dress and she'll feel better in trousers if you are wearing them too".

I said I'd wear trousers but I actually think I should wear a dress. It would look nicer. My sister is a size 18-20 so finds it very difficult to buy clothes that are 'young' enough for her that look nice.

Now, they're not happy that I've decided to wear a dress

Whose presentation is it? If the night is about your sister, then you should do what would make her happy, if the night is about you then it's up to you (but it would be kinder to wear trousers and make your sister happy, 14 is a horribly self-conscious age whatever shape and size one is).

Why not take her shopping a dress can still look nice on a sie 18-20 take her to Dorothy perkins or New Look they go upto a 20 and are young enough.

Wear a dress if you will feel better in it. Just explain to your sister.
