to expect that a walking 13mth old might want to get out of the buggy at some point while on a play trail.....

OK I have got my DB and SIL down for the weekend with their dd1 who is 13mths and suggested we go to a place with a play park and play trail. It may be wet and all the shoes dd1 has is a pair of black patent shoes , so I said that I could lend her a pair of wellies if she wished. SIL said no she would just keep dd in the buggy all the way round . Am I being unreasonable in thinking that a walking 13mth old might want to play?

I'm sure the child will soon let her know!

hairtwiddler · 14/11/2008 20:14

Thought this thread was going to be about a 13m old reluctant walker!
No, YANBU... I expect the little girl will want to play.
Patent shoes can be wiped down anyway... although maybe there is some correlation between the wearing of black patent and parental reluctance for child to get dirty?

FairLadyRantALot · 14/11/2008 20:17

Erm....a child that young may not be able to walk in wellies...or might not chose to walk anywhere but on homeground...
depends on the child I would think...and the walking ability, etc....

2point4kids · 14/11/2008 20:18

My kids would insist on playing LOUDLY
My niece however would prefer to sit and watch

Do you know your niece well? Perhaps she really doesnt like mud and outdoorsy stuff and her Mum knows that she will prefer to be in the pram?

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 20:19

LOL, she is very houseproud and was constantly telling her dd off for dropping food Today we went to a pet farm/play area and the poor kid was strapped in with the exception of the soft play bit

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 20:20

She is able and even if she crawled would it matter? Surely she would have more fun when not strapped in?

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 20:21

No my neice is definately a get stuck in girl, just her mother isn't.

Some people are like this. My PIL bought us one of those big travel system things which I used a lot until DS could walk. When he started walking I ditched the buggy for short distances.

Even now DS is 2, and very active, they insist on hulking him around in the buggy when he'd much prefer to walk. They look after him 2 days a week so it only happens occasionally, but I can't understand why they take him for walks in the buggy. It's weird, no? DS loves walking, skipping, running...yet they strap him in like he is a newborn. Hurumph.

FairLadyRantALot · 14/11/2008 20:32

Tbh, I wouldn't have liked my Kids to crawl through mud/dirt and stuff....not just about getting dirty, not that way inclined, but the wetness/coldness at teh moment....different story in summer...

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 20:39

Its not weather thats the problem, its people not clothing appropriately for it. IMHO there is no reason why a child in waterproofs, lots of layers and wellies cannot go out/walk/crawl in dry weather with wet floors. Its about exploration.

FairLadyRantALot · 14/11/2008 20:42

erm...well...my Kids as Babies/youngens would g a bit funny about waterproofs....especially ys...he hattes anything messy....just the way he is...
actually I was a bit like that....for instance hated getting my hands dirty or worse sticky...

Shoshe · 14/11/2008 20:47

Tethering wouldnt she let her fall in the pig sh** and be chased by the chickens like ours are

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 20:49

Well then he learned to dislike mess and dirt from you and unwittingly you have instilled the behaviour in him. This is what I worry may happen to my neice as being like this can stifle their play.

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 20:53

Aaah Shoshe, thank god you have come and understand what I mean FFS she didn't let her out! Went to FPs for the morning and only got out in the indoor bit for 30mins Wasn't allowed out in the animal barn, not allowed to go on the back of the bikes with me holding her while DB peddled She said I have just got her in to the buggy and won't get her back in again Something to do with never being allowed out me thinks No wonder she fights getting strapped in! Rant!!!!!

sorry but some kids just HATE mess - DS1 - would get as mucky as hell - didn't care. DS2 the tiniest bit of muck on him and he'd freak - even now at 5 he gets funny about dirty clothes...........DS3 appears to be taking after DS1 (thankfully).

Oh and all 3 of mine have been funny about walking on particular surfaces until about 6 months after they learnt to walk.

DS1 and 2 weren't walking about 13 months - however had they been I would probably have kept them in the buggy all the way round - unless they wanted to get out.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 14/11/2008 20:54

oh and in response to your last post - some kids just hate being put back in the buggy (DS3 HATES it when I get him in and out in a short space of time)

HeinzSight · 14/11/2008 20:55

How long has she been walking??? My DD is ALSO 13 months old and ALSO only has a pair of black patent shoes, well fitted from Clarks costing me £26. Whenever I can, I take her shoes and socks off because she falls over less frequently in bare feet. There's no way my DD would be able to walk in wellies. She'd constantly be flat on her face!

PS I don't have an issue with her getting dirty

Shoshe · 14/11/2008 20:57

when mindee1 was 13 months, dressed head to toe in waterproofs, she fell in the pigsh++ got covered in god knows what while eating honey comb, and her amum loved it
She is till a mucky pup

I once took a group down to the beach, they found a clay hill, covered it with water and spent the day sliding down it, they went home in their knickers and coats, a bit of muck never did any harm

FairLadyRantALot · 14/11/2008 20:58

erm...I don't dislike it now...so, how did I transfer it...

well, o.k. still like clean hands...but house a pigsty
ys, especially is, well, different, alien to me....not in an sn way...just well, different to our other Kids and different to many I know....
but that is just the way he is...but he is overcoming a lot of his inborn issues more and more...like new shoes, for instance....he will always be sensitive though....I thinkfear

ToThrottleABlackBird · 14/11/2008 21:01

DD is 15mo now, she cannot walk in wellies. She has been walking since she was 10months but sometimes she can be a pita when out and walking so sometimes I would rather her stay in her buggy.

FairLadyRantALot · 14/11/2008 21:01

ys started walking at 18 month and even then it took him many month to walk anywhere else (indoors) in his own shoes....just the way some Kids are....

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 21:01

LOL Shoshe saw the pics of the last one
GFQ my neice did want to get out, just wasn't allowed She is very steady on her feet and IMO the only way children learn to walk in wellies and get stuck in is practice.

OP posts:
Shoshe · 14/11/2008 21:03

teth dont think my car ever recovered

FairLadyRantALot · 14/11/2008 21:04

but ys can now walk beutyfully in wellies...but until about a year ago he would go a bit skizzo....even though I kinda broke a rule and bought him special (thomas) ones to encourage him...

of course if your dn wanted out and got upset...different story

mytetherisending · 14/11/2008 21:05

The funniest thing was that when we got home I got toys out for the LOs and because DN had not expended much energy wouldn't go to sleep and they wondered why?
