To be sick of little girls being portrayed as angels and little boys as devils-in-disguise?

I got a brochure today about a company that sells toiletries for children.

The name of said-company?

HalosnHorns

(Halos in pink, and horns in blue).

Why are little boys always portrayed as imps, devils, trouble-makers, etc, etc, etc?

It's no wonder so many grow up with low self-esteem, alot of their behaviour must just be like a self-fulfilling prophecy!

Rant over.

Well I'm in the same camp as Greensleeves and she has boys and I have girls. None of whom conform to most gender stereotypes.

Greensleeves · 13/11/2008 10:28

DS2's nursery are having a "princesses and pirates" day tomorrow

if I had girls I would definitely send them in as pirates, but I'm undecided about persuading ds2 to go in in a tutu

juuule · 13/11/2008 10:30

Agree with Mawbroon.
Irritates me, too, when boys are allowed to misbehave because 'boys will be boys'.

Fennel · 13/11/2008 10:30

Actually people tend to roll their eyes or look shocked when my dds beat each other up in public too. I had to separate dd1 attacking dd2 with a plank of wood recently at a school gardening morning. And they freaked out a visiting boy a while back by dd2 stamping on dd1's nose and drawing blood.

Though of course they do, being girls, battter their sisters in a rather angelic manner.

Fennel · 13/11/2008 10:31

Oh GS it must be an epidemic, our preschool is also having a Princesses and Pirates day . My sister is going to complain (and dress her ds in a princess outfit, which he'll love).

My dd1 and dd2 would have gone as pirates but dd3 will be a fairy princess.

Greensleeves · 13/11/2008 10:32

...and you can still look pretty and sweet with a busted nose

Greensleeves · 13/11/2008 10:33

I do have a nice tasteful little tutu, and he would love a wand...[ruminate] but then he is 85% piratical at the best of times, so I fear he is going to conform despite me

Fennel · 13/11/2008 10:37

Pirates are better role models for boys or girls, really. Especially if you're not a royalist. Pirates are a bit more nonconformist go-getters. They have more of a life. More freedom. Plus they hang out on luscious desert islands. And get to wave swords around. Stick to pirates.

OrmIrian · 13/11/2008 10:38

mischief I suspect you are a DEMOS - Defensive Mothers of Sons. As am I. As are most mothers of boys that I know. At some time and is some place, you will feel beleagured because of something your son has done that is causing ructions. It's just one of those things

OrmIrian · 13/11/2008 10:39

DD would eat her own poo rather than go dressed a a princess! I'd probably have 3 pirates - although DS#1 would like all the pink.

MissChief · 13/11/2008 10:41

DEMOS, i like that, feel somehow it's a life-long condition!
btw, i do actually use halos & horns on ds and hadn't even noticed how they market it! maybe it's not on the tube? Must go and check..

YANBU. Good thread.

2shoes · 13/11/2008 11:26

yanbu
girls are a lot worse than boys imo

Fennel · 13/11/2008 11:30

No they are not Worse than Boys. Some children are harder/louder/more challenging than others. Some are boys. Some are girls.

One of my dds is far louder/more challenging/demanding than the other two. She's like a different species from the other two.

lovleygirls · 13/11/2008 11:38

I think it is because girl's behaviour is often more sneaky than boys, boys often have a scrap and then it is over! Girls go on and on and on!!!

lovelysongbirdfliesaway · 13/11/2008 11:42

yanbu

Greensleeves · 13/11/2008 11:49

lovelygirls that's stereotypical hogwash

I have a little sneaky-beaky and an up-front defiant one - both boys. And I know little girls who would square up to you rather than be devious, and aren't remotely bitchy or whiny or any of the other stupid cliches people tack onto them.

wasabipeanut · 13/11/2008 11:51

Agree with the OP - as they mother of a boy. I get really annoyed at this "naughty boy" and "angelic girl" assumption.

I remember reading a thread on here ages ago from somone whos dd who was about 9 or so I think liked to dress in sort of quite funky junior goth pirate stuff rather than pink and sparkly but both mother and daughter were getting some stick for it which is rather sad.

Fennel · 13/11/2008 12:01

No they are not "sneaky" either. . Not my girls anyway.

Why sneak when you can just confront and argue?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 13/11/2008 12:03

I have a girl..but the two worst behaved most aggressive toddlers I know are girls! YANBU.

wb · 13/11/2008 12:05

YANBU - although as the mother of 2 boys I much prefer the 'devil' stereotype to the angel one - how dull to have to be angelic. Obviously no stereotypes would be better.

motherinferior · 13/11/2008 12:41

My girls aren't sneaky. I really resent that damn allegation, which is made time and time again, that little girls are manipulative/bitchy/underhand. As far as I can see virtually all my daughters' friends are generous, affectionate, and fun. Both the girls and boys.

onthewarpath · 13/11/2008 12:56

Yanbu. Personalities and characters are not gender related. For having 2 children ot each gender, I really cannot say that any of them are always angels or badly behaved. It depends on a lot of factors
The sleep they had
Who is arround...
