In all honesty IANBU i just want arant and to make people realise being slim is NOT the be all and end all.
Ok, I have a condition that means i cant put on weight so i eat and eat and am size 6. yes wonderful i know
however, it is because i am MALNOURISHED. it also means that i will probably not live to see 40.
today a woman who is late 50s and prob size 16 (and knows about my condition and what it means) say sto me as she is walking past "oh, I WISH i was as slim as you".
usually i just ignore these comments but grrr. I just wanted to march after her and say" well, i wish that i was going to live to be as old as you and see my children grow up but there we go"

ok, rant over, but please people remember that some things are so much more important than looks and size.

Of course you are not unreasonable - utterly stupid and insensitive comment to make.

At least you have an answer ready for her if she says something like that again!

petitmaman · 12/11/2008 21:04

I am not brave enough, she is my boss!

What an awful condition. Am thankfully not sick but have some kind of body metabolism funk up that means I don't put on weight, it is incredibly frustrating not only to have people be jealous of something I can't change and don't particularly like, but to be constantly monitored by health professionals who seem to think I'm lying about not being anorexic. It's really horrible, and I have a lot of sympathy.

Being small ought to be the same as being large IMO - just not something you bring up with an adult unless THEY offer it up as a topic of conversation.

hippipotami · 12/11/2008 21:06

What an awful thing for her to say. If she is your boss, then I think it is time to sit down with her adn spell out how her comment made you feel adn what you wanted to say in reply.

Sorry for you, hope you are ok.

petitmaman · 12/11/2008 21:21

sorry ranted too much in original post. dont want sympathy just so fed up with all the mag articles etc about diets. just enjoy life and appreciate it. a few inches is not a lot in the great scheme of things

YANBU, what a stupid insensitive comment. I'm so sorry for your illness.

Try to remember people only say these kind of things because they are morons. Maybe she just wanted to remind you she was a moron in case you forgot.

I was once at an interview evening with DH for a job along with two other couples and the bosses wife said "we were going to give the job to the man with the fattest wife but you are all too thin!" and I said "if I said you were too fat, that wouldn't be okay would it?" Guess who didn't get the job....

I get annoyed when large women think it's acceptable to say to a naturally slim person 'you cant afford to loose anymore weight.' I

Imagine turning round stating 'you can't afford to put on anymore weight.'

tiredsville · 12/11/2008 21:46

Petitmaman, obviously I don't know your condition, but have you tried a weight-gainer product? My brother takes progain milkshake, it's 1000 calories a scoop! Really tasty chocolate flavour. He's a bodybuilder.

petitmaman · 12/11/2008 21:49

many many people feel free to comment on my weight.
inc plumber the other day who told me i need to put weight on. 'oh i know' i say 'i am trying' 'hmm looks like it' he says (i was eating grapes, this never happens. i dont do green and have the appetite of a teenage boy).'men like something to hold on to you know'. as you say if i was large he would not have felt free to comment like this (I didn't know him)

It's a blody cheek, he didn't by any chance have a beer gut? Then you could reply 'women prefer a six pack you know.'
