For my husband to earn £65,000 per annum and we still can't afford to live in this bloody country!!

Mortgage has gone up, electric has gone up, 5 mouths to feed, 3 children to clothe etc etc and month after month is a bloody struggle. Am fed up with straping money together when my husband earns a good wage and we should be able to get by! I now need to search for a way of 'me' bringing in some money but with a young baby at home and 2 others at school i am at a loss as to how! Please give me some job ideas or ways to make money!!

Don't do it, angels

angelswithdirtyfaces · 06/11/2008 13:36

I am a SAHM - was being tongue in cheek.

Bride1 · 06/11/2008 13:37

Windegoddess, in my early days here I admitted that, on one single occasion 11 years earlier, I had parked for 20 minutes in one of 10 unused disabled bays in an otherwise deserted carpark so that I could transport a poorly baby to a shop without getting him soaked.

It wasn't pretty. I was lacerated.

But I survived and lived to post another day and actually now really like some of the people who lashed into me and find myself agreeing with them on other threads. Ya live and learn.

Exasperatedmummy, we actually tried to f**k off to New Zealand, were accepted to live there but we couldn't sell our house for enough money to make it worthwhile and in any way feasible, so that may not be an option either

pamelat · 06/11/2008 13:38

Nationwide.
The woman said that yesterdays products are still available today, if that makes sense so as long as I committed today I got 1.38% above base rate. Lets hope it doesnt go sky high!!

mrsruffallo · 06/11/2008 13:39

I had an opinion employing cleaners. It was a bloodbath.
Namechanged once I recovered

exasperatedmummy · 06/11/2008 13:39

On a serious note, i think everyone lives to their means, im not sure why that is, but its one of those laws like toast falling butter side down etc. I guess what happens is this, you earn more, you buy more, often on credit, you might have two decent cars, decent house, nice area, etc etc - i don't think that makes you greedy, i just think that then, when money gets tight, you might even feel it more than someone who has always earnt less, but been more frugal - not saying everyone should be frugal, but it really is a case of living to our means. Half the problems with the economy is that people have been encouraged to live without their means, credit thrown at you like some sort of compliment "here, have some more money" sort of thing. I don't judge for that, we fell right into that trap - lived beyond our means, and now paying the price.

So, maybe we are being unkind to the OP? But actually £65K isn't going to get "killed" by tax, yes, they will have a hefty tax bill but it is only after £40K or so, so only £25k will be taxed at the higer rate. None of us like tax, we probably wont be able to pay our tax bill this year - we are self employed and don't earn anywhere near £65K, might take us about five years to clock that much. I think it is possible to have a good lifestyle on that sort of money, but only if you are debt free, and that really is the crunch of it isn't it.

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 06/11/2008 13:40

oooo a cleaner - it's first on the top of "luxuries" to pay for when I'm finally working

FairLadyRantALot · 06/11/2008 13:41

Angel...but all those that work pay a lot of taxes in relation to their earnings....as someone said as so on as you are over 35K you pay 40%....we are "just" over that...so, could say, tis not fair....actually thinking about this...I wonder how much worse of we will be in real terms, once dh changed his JOb (9K less a year)....maybe with paying less taxes it will work out not as different compared to now...

saythatagain · 06/11/2008 13:42

Agree with expat re the almost pathalogical 'holiday as an entitlement' with people. This is not me being bitter; we've not had a holiday for 5 years, which was 4 days in a b&b in Cornwall (fab). It just isn't at the top of our list of priorities. Paying the mortgage/utilities/food etc is. We both work full time so we are quite glad to have the opportunity to actually be at and enjoy our home.
Roll on happier times for all of us

exasperatedmummy · 06/11/2008 13:43

Is the OP new??

Oh bless, she will learn

Never post about money, never ever post whining you don't have enough of it when your DH earns over twice the national average. Don't be posting about SAHMs (AT ALL), don't post about benefits, religeon, state v private schools, to have or not have a cleaner, nannies V au pairs, chavs, pikeys, benefit cheats, etc etc

If you avoid all of the above, you will have a really nice quiet Mnet time - but it wont REALLY be that much fun

angelswithdirtyfaces · 06/11/2008 13:43

But, £65K sound alot - that not actually what you come out with. £3K a month is not a lot really.

FairLadyRantALot · 06/11/2008 13:44

Or maybe not.......I wish I would understand taxes....

exasperatedmummy · 06/11/2008 13:44

angelswithdirtyfaces i am a SAHM today i have, dropped DD at playschool, watched jeremy kyle, drank copious amounts of coffee, given her a gregs sausage roll for lunch and just waiting for 4.30 so i can order a kebab isn't that what we all do

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 06/11/2008 13:44

exasperated mummy - you've missed another key thing not to post about on that list

Breast/bottle feeding

angelswithdirtyfaces · 06/11/2008 13:45

I can understand what OP is saying. On that salary, they should be able to afford at least one nice holiday a year. It is mostly likely they have worked really hard to earn that level of salary.

Umlellala · 06/11/2008 13:46

well, in this market, we have been unable to sell our flat (with big mortgage), so can't 'downsize' even if we wanted to right now. Don't earn as much as OP, and are struggling to live the life of luxury we deserve , but still realistically know we are 'well-off'.

FairLadyRantALot · 06/11/2008 13:46

angel....3K netto (it is netto, right)...is a lot! Even if you have 1K or so mortgage....you still have 2 K left live

saythatagain · 06/11/2008 13:46

angelswithdirtyfaces: I've just had a Greggs sausage, bean & cheese pasty...Jesus! It was simply divine!!!!!

kiddiz · 06/11/2008 13:46

And weaning guyFAwkesreQuiem!!!

FairLadyRantALot · 06/11/2008 13:47

angel...most people, or a lot of people, work reallllllllllllllly hard...

exasperatedmummy · 06/11/2008 13:47

I wonder if anyone has actually answered the OP?? Bless her, she was only asking for some advice to bring some more money in lol.

PortBlacksandPRESIDENTOBAMA · 06/11/2008 13:47

Before i namechanged (about 2 years ago) i got into an argument with LittleLapin on a thread.

I know, i know.

angelswithdirtyfaces · 06/11/2008 13:47

Yep, exasperated.
