To be upset that yoga teacher told me not to come back to her class

I've been going to a post natal yoga class since DS, now 7 months, was 6 weeks old. Really loved going as you could bring your baby and have them next to you whilst you did some yoga and had a chat with the other mums. A month or so ago the yoga teacher encouraged us to sign up for a chunk of classes and pay in advance so I signed up for a further 4. Anyway, on Wednesday I tried to go along as usual but was running very late as I'd been delayed at an earlier dentist appointment so got there for the last half hour of a 2 hour session. I got there to find there was no class. The teacher was just outside with someone else who had turned up late. I asked if there was no class - she looked pretty annoyed and said no, noone showed up. I said, oh well, see you next week. She then turned to me and said, actually, I would prefer you didn't come any more. Your baby is too mobile and I could step on him. I tried to say, I only have one class left before I go back to work, can I not just come to that as I really enjoy it, plus I've paid for it because you encouraged me to and didn't say there was an age limit but she interrupted me and said, another class is more suitable. Really quite upset by the way she handled it. DS is mobile but another baby more so and I assume she hasn't told this mum not to come! Couldn't she have just let me come to the final class - was my last anyway! Sure she only said it because she was peed off about noone coming to her class and wanted to have a go at someone! Rant over.

YANBU. If you've paid for the class she has no right to tell you not to come.

I would expect her to refund you 1/4 of what you paid seeing as she has made this decision.

I would turn up to the last class and have your baby strapped into the car seat with some toys. Then she can't complain about stepping on him.

o let me get this right. you were going to turn up and expect to participate in the last half hour of the class?? a 2 hour class??

where you wont have been warmed up correct

will disrupt everyone as you enter and get organised (if anyone was actually there)

and is this the first time you've come in late? or do you quite regularly come in late?

i need full idea of picture before i give you my decision.

I would be upset too. Im sorry if you are doing a class with mums and babies she cant really think that people with new babies can make a class on time.
I would call her (I suck at face to face) and tell her, you will be at the last class as you have paid. She sounds like she was having a bad day.

Elmoandella, I went to the last half an hour because I had paid for it and because I was having a disastrous day and wanted to try and get to something that I had arranged, even if for a short time, rather than writing off the whole day. I walked 20 minutes to get there and 20 minutes back. I've never been late before but it's very much part of the ethos that you come when you like and do as much or as little as you can. Some mums just sit and breastfeed the whole time and people come and go as they like. It's yoga - no need to warm up!

i've just stopped going to mums and babies clas.went for 2 years as had ds. then stopped for few months. then went with dd.

went with both till they were past walking and instructor was great. she used to play with babies and make us run round park with babies.

i can never remember anyone being more late than 5 or so mins. and that was at 9.30 or 10am were the start times.

it is very possible to get there on time. even with your first, or having another screaming toddler to drop somewhere first. and even on occasion i took both in double.

but they have health and safety issue about being late in our gym. if you miss the whole of the first 15 mins warm up you are not allowed to participate incase you do an injury. this is especially important as until 5 months after birth you should not do anything high impact or that put too much strain on certain joints without warming up. as your weakened muscles from pg cannot support in the same way.

Feel like sending an email actually and saying, what a shame, after a really enjoyable 5 months, to be told not to return!

even with yoga there is a warm up. we do a variation. everything from low impact aerobics to yoga to dance. it's varied from week to week.

even in yoga we have a warm up yoga routine which is then followed by the actual class.

I'd be annoyed if I were doing a two hour yoga class and someone 'turned up for the last half hour'. I'd be expecially annoyed if I were the teacher.

She should certainly refund your money as she doesn't plan to let you do the last class but she has every right to be well pissed off.

She's also probably feeling hurt because no-one turned up. I think you should have the heart to realise that she's more hurt about the whole thing than you are and to cut her some slack and resolve not to be late for things.

Sheeesh!

My yoga class we didnt do warm ups.

Its a yoga class, who gives a shit if you're late ONCE!

If the yoga teacher cant deal with people being late for whatever reason, its her problem.

i think YANBU to get a refund for the last class you will not be taking.

but YABU for turning up late and expecting her to still take you in for class.

think you should try out a new class where she isn't instructor as you obviously not very keen on her. and try to be ontime. tis very rude and unfair to disturb rest of class.

when they say that you can do as little or as much as you want. this means push yourself in class as far as you can so soon after pg. and so far a lo will let you on that particular day.

this does not mean you can come in when suits you.

At yoga classes I've been too we all spend the first part getting into the right state of mind. People farting about getting changed and being late are really selfish and can ruin the atmosphere.

I can't abide lateness. It's so selfish.

and in my yoga classes we spend last 15 mins cooling down and winding down too. by time you got ready and lo settled you would be getting ready to go??

The lateness is a completely separate issue from being told that you're not allowed to go to a class you've paid for.

Yes it's a journey. It's not two hours thrown together you can dip in and out of if done correctly. I think it's very disrespectful to drift in three quarters of the way through.

I dont like lateness much myself, im 10 minutes early for everything, which is just as annoying i expect.

At my post natal yoga there was babies yelling all over the place, they are very informal and people were always late.

BUT
In an adult only class, if i knew i was going to be late, i wouldnt go.

Elmoandella and Spiderman - me being late had nothing to do with it!!! The class wasn't running so I wasn't asking to come in late! Plus, it's yoga, not brain science with 8 little babies causing lots of disturbance anyway.

she's not a very good advertisement for the calming effects of yoga though is she? Perhaps you should use the refund on a hi energy spinning class?

i disagree. i think her lateness could be part of why instructor has asked her not to return to her class.
