particularly when we live in terraced housing and their piano is up against the wall that ajoins ds' room?

honest question.

are they perfectly within their rights or are they in breach of some useful law? they didn't even stop when poor ds started howling - which they must have been able to hear through the wall.

suppose i should be grateful that they've stopped doing it at midnight which used to be the norm.

YANBU. We get that too sometimes - we're in a block of flats and the lease specifically says no music after 11pm. I can't think who would have come up with that as a cut off - I would say later than 9pm is unreasonable. We get revenge with noisy kids first thing though

We had someone starting to let off fireworks outside my dcs' windows at 1 am on Saturday!! Luckily it started raining so they didn't carry on for too long. I hate some people's lack of consideration for others.

As far as fireworks is concerned, I'm sure the law prohibits fireworks after 10pm.

Wheels, YANBU. That is far too late. When I was younger, living at home, I had a piano and no way would I play it late, out of consideration for the neighbours.

My previous neighbours, who were a bunch of students, used to make a racket late at night. Quite a few times I had to storm over in my pj's and complain. Thing is, my ds was a noisy baby at the time who used to make a racket all day and cry in the night, and sometimes as parents we feel we don't have the right to complain but you can't stop a baby/small child from making noise, you CAN stop playing the piano.

isn't it the law that you arem't supposed to sound a car horn in a built up area after 11pm so you don't disturb people? In which case, seems reasonable to me that you shouldn't have to put up with other obtrusive noise after 11pm. Bang on the wall or have a word with them. Or for a less obviously confrontational approach but that makes your point, put some cheesy music on from your side very loudly each time. They'll get the message. Maybe not reasonable itself but it's worked for me!

Negotiation is the key to neighbour disputes. Tbh even if they were in breach of the law having rights and enforcing them are two completely different things! Why not have a word, or if you don't know them put a polite note through their door along the lines of "I appreciate that we work to different schedules, but my son sleeps in the room next to your piano and it wakes him up every night".

If you live in an older house check your deeds, they do often have clauses about noise after a certain time (usually fairly early) which might give you some bargaining power if they're not co-ooperative.

We used to live next door to a student house in Brighton. Once a new tenant put their stereo against the wall - the head of our bed was on the other side! She was happy to move it to the other wall when we pointed this out. Another time though there was a massive party and they refused to turn down the music so we called the drug squad Much more effective than environmental health at shutting a party down!

YANBU, I really hate it when people have such lack of consideration for others.
We have a piano which DH plays in the daytime, but if he has to do some work late (DH is a musician) he has a weighted keyboard which is plugged into the computer and DH uses earphones. He also does this when the piano/guitars etc get on my nerves and I can no longer block it all out.

I called round on my neighbours when we first moved in pre DD and said if noise ever bothered them to come and tell us and we would turn it down or stop etc. They told us not to worry as they would probably make more noise as had 4 young DC lol They have since moved and I miss them, our new neighbours are soooo noisy even I can here them and I am partially deaf.

thanks all. would you believe that after the piano had stopped, the upstairs neighbours had a jamming session on their guitars!! they are three blokes in their mid-thirties, and seem to think that they are "in a band".

i don't think I'd mind so much if either set of neighbours could actually play something properly... their practice seems to be limited to messing about late at night.

I hate man who still think they can make it as musicians past about 25 - I have many friends with such partners. Such vanity - they all have kids, for whom they don't do enough -

Just realised my last post is contradictory - some with girlfriends, some without! Oh well - still bloody inconsiderate playing music after 11 - or indeed after 9pm IMO
