to not let my 9 year old daughter watch Mamma Mia?

Apparently all the other girls at school have seen it about a million times and she feels really left out .
I've looked at the BBFC listing and it doesn't sound like the right kind of fare for a 9 year old. But it does seem to be enormously popular with little girls. AIBU? As far as I can see, this is a film aimed at women, not at girls in primary school.

(and yes I do remember the utter humiliation of being the only one in my class not allowed to watch Jaws at the age of 9 - I did get over it)

My DD1-9 wasn't crazy about the music, but my DD2-6 high school musical fanatic loved it. The adult themes didn't phase them at all.

Hmm, we took both DD (6yo) and DS (4yo) to see it and they LOVED it. DS was singing along and even got up and danced at the end. The more adult bits of the storyline just went over their heads.

Do take some hankies with you for the sad bits, you will hug your DD and have a wee greet. DD was a bit embarrassed

I have seen it and a friend has taken her 10month old DS 5 times as he enjoys the music.

I didn't see anything that would make me think the parents with children at the 1745 screening were BU to be honest.

apparently it has the words 'slut' and 'screw' in it

and there are sex references

dd1 loves ABBA so do feel a bit guilty

Must be honest, can't remember seeing anything in it unsuitable for 9 year olds, but then I was watching with DH, having dispatched my three to the Lakes for a few days.

providing you're ready for a few questions about the subject matter (e.g. 'why doesn't she know who her daddy is?') then there really isn't anything bad actually shown on screen. That I remember, anyway.

There's a bit of innuendo but I suspect it would go over a 9 y.o's head. Did any of us pick up on the really dark bits of Grease when we were 9 or 10?

actually maybe everyone did and I was just a really naive child.

I've told my dd that she can watch it when she's 10 so I'd think 9 was near enough.

My eight and six year olds have seen it twice. They enjoyed it enormously. So did their 11 year old sister and my 75 year old mother and me. It is a great female bonding experience! Sure you need to deal with the fact that basic premise of the plot is that Meryl Streep's daughter has three potential fathers, but a nine year old is surely going to be aware of the facts of life.
YABU - you should go watch it together.

If she loves Abba take her, they are such minor bits that I can't remember hearing them and it is mainly singing anyway.

I took my 5 year old ds for his birthday! (he asked) I looked up the references on the pbbfc website and decided he wouldn't get them anyway.

He loved it

5 of us took our 6 year old daughters to the cinema a few weeks ago to watch it. The adult themes passed them by totally and we had a blast. One of the trailers however had a few swear words in it (we all started coughing loudly through it ).

it's mostly singing and poncing about in beautiful scenery - it's a lovely film and my ten year old adored it.

If the words slut and screw are there I didn't notice and if they were said then they weren't said while someone was whipping someone's butt while shagging them and shouting you slutty screw

I would never point you in the direction of a naughty film but this is much, much less bad than lion witch wardrobe and prince caspian.

No violence, no nudity, lots of sweet relationships

it is so sweet i would have taken a 20-pack of sick bags if i'd known.

On paper the storyline is a bit adult but then so is Peter Pan (child abduction, violent scenes involving crocodiles, cross dressing etc) - amid all the froth and nonsense it really doesn't show

I would rather gouge my eyes out than watch it again btw

Its a fab film I loved it.
There is one bit that has a sexual reference but for the most part it is clean

Oh ggirl, you're gonna sob your heart out at one particular bit (about mothers and daughters relationship)... I went with my 11 yo. She thought it was a soppy load of twaddle actually, but I thought it ok.

My mil took both dd's to see it, I trusted her judgement and didn't for one second think it may be unsuitable, mind you dd's are 3 and 9 and it hasn't done them any harm.

My 10-year-old loved it. She's quite young for her age and it didn't seem to occur to her to question anything dodgy. I'm normally quite sensitive to the smut factor in things, but I sat through the whole thing with her (loving every minute and glad that DH wasn't there to take the piss) not remotely concerned.

I think it's only a PG.

My DD is ten and we took her a few weeks ago. Se loved it but mainly because she loves ABBA. My sister also took her 4 and 6 year old(also ABBA fans) but personally I think that's a bit young.

There are smatterings of adult themes but go over the heads of most kids and are nothing as bad as you might find in a soap.

Anyway, there's so much else in the film to overwhelm the emotions, she'll come out remembering the music, the sunshine, the scenery, the funny bits, the pathos, you name it. But not the fact that one of the main characters didn't know who her dad was.

My daughter (3.11) and two DSSs (11, 13) have seen it, as have my niece (4.5) and nephews (nearly 7 and 10).

All of them loved it.

I think that it is a lovely film for children, and for little girls in particular.

I saw it about a week ago and it is totally safe, most of the adult stuff seh wouldnt understand so -YABU

Now Jaws on the otherhand I saw when i was six and was scared of going to the loo for about a month as I thought it would bite my bottom!

Have seen it with my 5 year old and there was HONESTLY HONESTLY nothing in it that she shouldn't have seen/heard

Worse things are said in my house over Sunday lunch

Lots of great singing and dancing.

Good fun.Take her you'll both love it.

If you're really worried wait til it comes out on DVD then you can watch it first. 24th November (not that I'm counting the days or anything).
