To hate the track suit families?

Ok, I know the general concencus is going to be that I'm a snob but...

AIBU to get irritated by 'tracksuit' families? By this I mean families who litrally live in tracksuits?

There is a family opposite who have two boys aged 9 and 11. Both of them wear tracksuit bottoms for school (and all other times!) so they basically wear the school jumper, t-shirt etc and scruffy tracksuit bottoms.

Come september when most people buy all new uniform I make a point of wondering if their mum will buy some school trousers for them to go back to school in...

Just before the holidays one year my son was talking to one of them and he said something about his new school trousers...Next day he left the house and it turned out that his mum had bought him NEW TRACKSUIT BOTTOMS to go back to school in!

Another family down the street with boys was out in the driveway one time and their mum said (or screeched!) "oi you two, I've got you some new clothes...but you can't have them now, they're for best!" so the lads ran to the bags and took the stuff out and it was all tracksuit bottoms! And the woman genuinly believed that they were smart and could be born for 'best'

Another lad down the street...just started secondary school...went to school first week all smart in new uniform, 2nd week he left the house in tracky bottoms but with the rest of the uniform still looking nice and smart!

I know it shouldn't, but it annoys me!

I think your missing the point sockmonster

VinegARGHHHTits · 16/10/2008 12:19

You are right about one thing, me finks your a snob

Tamarto · 16/10/2008 12:21

No,

Why does it annoy you? it's not your child.

LOL @ being called fussy by someone who hates other people wearing certain clothes

GhostlySinCity · 16/10/2008 12:21

I can live with being a snob rather that than a chav in scruffy tracksuit bottoms!

tbh I do agree with the op/poppy re inappropriateness for school

but the tone and phrasing of the op - "tracksuit families" in particular, is pure snobbery.

VinegARGHHHTits · 16/10/2008 12:24

oh so now wearing tracksuit bottoms = chav does it

VinegARGHHHTits · 16/10/2008 12:25

personally i would rather be a tracksuit wearing chav than a snob

brightongirldownunder · 16/10/2008 12:25

I think school uniforms should be tracksuits, anyway. If all the kids were in them they would be "uniform" (as long as they were in the same colour and had the school logo on). Comfortable clothing may help concentration..?
Just an idea.

Tamarto · 16/10/2008 12:26

No VinegARGH - Only if they are scruffy [roll-eyes]

PoppyCoc · 16/10/2008 12:27

By dressing your child in uniform that is smart and clean and sending them to school in a presentable manner I believe you are giving your child the message that school is important and is different from normal 'play time'.

I dont believe tracksuit bottoms convey that message.

I am not a snob and I'm actually sat here in a pair of tracksuit bottoms now. But I wouldnt leave the house in them and I would *never8 send my dd to school in them.

bronze · 16/10/2008 12:29

(for £5 a pair!)??
Well yes £5 feeds my family for a day and more. I could't find £5 now if I wanted to. I'm just lucky that Granny buys school uniform.
I guess their thinking might be that they can wear the new ones to school and then when they're oler they can wear them at home. Can't do that with school trousers can they.
I would rather be a chav than such a snob.

motherinferior · 16/10/2008 12:30

Well, PC, my DD1 - whose knees are sticking through the rips in the jeans she wore to school yesterday - seems to have a fairly high opinion of school and its workings.

You'd hate her clothes, and those of her Y1 sister (also in jeans and a T-shirt which doesn't match her zippy fleece, today). D'you know what? I don't care. And I bet TracksuitMomma doesn't give a flying fandango either.

brightongirldownunder · 16/10/2008 12:30

But Poppycoc, maybe thats why so many kids try and alter their uniform? I would have thought that the more relaxed a child is about going to school, the less likelihood there is of them wanting to skip lessons.
They can be smart(ish) and clean too you know

PoppyCoc · 16/10/2008 12:30

Why Chav or Snob?

I don't think they are mutually exclusive you know.

I am neither

CherryChapstick · 16/10/2008 12:31

What the fuck has it got to do with you what people are wearing?

VinegARGHHHTits · 16/10/2008 12:32

some schools by me allow younger children to wear them as part of the uniform, i think if the school allows this then there is nothing worng in it, but you would probably say the schools me are
'chavvy' anyway, i live on a council estate you know

I think that the fact that TracksuitMomma doesnt give a flying fandango is my point actually MI.

Anyhow you can send your kids to school wearing what you like. I've just given my opinion.

brightongirldownunder · 16/10/2008 12:33

Jesus - tracksuits were cool in the '70's - what's happened?

VinegARGHHHTits · 16/10/2008 12:34

PC why wouldnt you leave the house in your tracksuit bottoms?

CherryChapstick · 16/10/2008 12:35

There is a very lovely lady who lives near me with a severe medical condition, she lives in tracksuit bottoms, as she values the comfort. She is a clean tidy person, and also very lovely (I already said that, didn't I??). Shall I go and tell her that she is a chav then?

PoppyCoc · 16/10/2008 12:36

Tracksuit bottoms are not flattering to a woman of my size

Tamarto · 16/10/2008 12:37

Nah CC just slag her off online.

PoppyCoc · 16/10/2008 12:38

Can I just add I never said tracksuit bottoms were chavvy

Otherwise I would suggest the OP opens her eyes / life a little more and she might find a few (hundred) things worth being riled about instead.
