to wish that some extra-curricular activities could just be about an hour's fun, and not involve badges/exams/tournaments blablabla

YANBU. My 5 year old is expected to do 2 ballet classes a week next year and enter for exams (there are also compulsory extra classes before the exams) and they look at me like I've got two heads when I say I want her to have fun, not do exams.

My dd has to do ballet and tap exams too.

You have to pay for the practise sessions beforehand
Pay for the exams
Have ballet tights (which by the time the next exam comes round they have grown out of)
Correct colour scrunchie for hair

And don't just don't talk to me about hair for exams. They get assessed in the exams for grooming.
