Everywhere and everyone now refers to children as kids. "Kids Menu" ffs. I hate it. They even said kids on the 10 o clock BBC news the other night.

I hate it.

well I say kids

and rozzers (though not cops, sounds American to me)

Blu · 07/10/2008 12:02

But at least if it says Kids Menu you know it is going to be nuggetsandchips, sausageandchips, pizzaandchips...

Children's Menu may be quite a different matter

Are you my Mum?

chipmonkey · 07/10/2008 12:42

Reminds me of something I read in RD years ago.
Overheard in a park: "Mum, please do not refer to my children as kids. A kid is a baby goat and my child is not a goat."
Then on handing packet of sweets to child:
"Here are your sweets, love. Now make sure to offer one to Nanny"

mm22bys · 07/10/2008 12:53

For some reason, it sounds really odd to me when my parents refer to DS1 and DS2 as "the kids", as in, "how are the kids doing?". Maybe because they are normally not colloquial, but it sounds so odd, almost impersonal.

Guess that makes YNU!

Come along, children, spit spot! let's not get our petticoats in a twist, wot ho, toodle pip....

It's just a word....modern, colloquial, informal. Fine when used in most contexts. Good point, chipmonkey! What's wrong with goats, anyway - they are cute, little playful things and they're always hungry. Sounds about right to me.

I bet the ones who hate that word also hate strangers in shops calling them "love". As in : I am NOT your love!

Get over yourselves!

PinkyDinkyDooToo · 07/10/2008 13:44

I was going to say YABU. But, I agree that on the news and on Menus etc. it is more appropriate to write childrens.

On MN and in RL chatting though, I feel kids is perfectly acceptable

EachPeachPearMum · 07/10/2008 14:24

YANBU- I hate the term- it's vile, and demeaning to children this.
I do not call a lavatory a bog either.
Or use 'Hubby' (pet hate) or 'telly'.

Each to her own.

AbbaFan · 07/10/2008 14:26

What is it with these 'i hate the term .....' threads

MrsMattie · 07/10/2008 14:27

southeastastra · 07/10/2008 14:27

hate it too

wessexgirl · 07/10/2008 14:27

From the age of about 9, I refused to allow my parents to refer to my brother and I as 'the kids'. I thought it sounded pejorative, for some reason. They called us 'the folks' instead, lol.

GobbledigookisThrifty · 07/10/2008 14:27

YABU - not really worth getting worked up about is it?

wessexgirl · 07/10/2008 14:28

Oops, that should be 'my brother and me' - excuse my lapse in pedantry.

MascaraOHara · 07/10/2008 14:28

I love the word kids.. I even openly use 'kid' as a nickname for my kid

Cappuccino · 07/10/2008 14:29

it's getting boring turning up on a thread to find that Blu has already expressed your point in a far more efficient way that you ever could

Miyazaki · 07/10/2008 14:30

I'm just grateful when I don't hear

plumandolive · 07/10/2008 15:33

VictorianSqualor · 07/10/2008 15:51

I prefer kids to tots.

TwoPumpkins · 08/10/2008 12:07
