Everywhere and everyone now refers to children as kids. "Kids Menu" ffs. I hate it. They even said kids on the 10 o clock BBC news the other night.

I hate it.

FAQ · 07/10/2008 11:36

nametaken - FYI - a search for your username and the word "kids" reveals 190 results, "kid" 21 times

Flamebat · 07/10/2008 11:36

I prefer not kids.

Hate Kiddies.

Anythign with a z is pretty much hell.

JoyceGrenfell · 07/10/2008 11:36

George... don't do that

Flamebat · 07/10/2008 11:36

I do type it before people do a search - mainly cos it is fewer letters than children

Marne · 07/10/2008 11:36

lol, my neighbour hates the word 'kids' so i use it alot around her

Snobbery

I don't see the problem.

Kewcumber · 07/10/2008 11:37

"Who's Joyce Grenfell?"

Just bury me now, with a nice pair of slippers and a cup of cocoa, put me out of amy (obviously ancient) misery.

MorningTownRide · 07/10/2008 11:37

I tend to call mine puppies...destruction, eat everything and pee on the carpet.

ranting · 07/10/2008 11:37

War time actress.

nametaken · 07/10/2008 11:37

LOL FAQ I knew someone would.

Now we know JoyceGrenfell is a mumsnetter.

I disdain the creeping tide of slang - 'kids' on BBC news, the Police referred to as 'cops' all the way through a major feature on the Observer this w/e...but in general chat, kids is fine. Not derogatory, not sentimental, not mock-disparaging (rugrats, anlklebiters etc - shudder).

Hassled · 07/10/2008 11:38
JodieG1 · 07/10/2008 11:39

I think kids is fine.

Kewcumber · 07/10/2008 11:39

joyce Grenfell pure genius

nametaken · 07/10/2008 11:39

oh yeah, cops, that's another one I hate.

PsychoAxeMurdererMum · 07/10/2008 11:40

I say 'kiddies'

much prefer it to 'kids', and far far better I find that referring to the 'mini psycho's'!!

JoyceGrenfell · 07/10/2008 11:41

Blu - exactly. It's not so much in everyday life, it's when used in journalism, retail etc. Just lazy.

DarrellRivers · 07/10/2008 11:41

Can tolerate kids just about but am aware I am old-school

JoyceGrenfell · 07/10/2008 11:41

Kewcumber - why thank you

bran · 07/10/2008 11:42

Joyce Grenfell, a very funny woman. (I think I'm almost exactly the same age as Kew, but she and I are honorary 30-somethings as we both have a child under 5. )

Flamebat · 07/10/2008 11:42

I was just always brought up that kids are baby goats

S1ur · 07/10/2008 11:50

Nah yab unreasonably demanding of your news casters and pub menus.

Oh no wait, bbc you say, ah well that's different - they of course should refer to under 12s as ageistically challenged.

I remember HATING me and my sister being referred to as kids when we were kids. Of course now I use it all the time.

Liffey · 07/10/2008 11:53

Yes lapin, Kidz is annoying.

I don't really care. If I'm chatting to posh folk I make sure I say children, just incase the think I'm a guttersnipe.
