Well done for calling SS. At least now you have done what you can. Did they say how quickly they would go there? And will they get back to you at all?

So what did she say SS said to her? Did they explain to her that it is not safe to do this? If you see the baby outside again, or know that she is out without the baby, I think you should call the police while she is doing it. You don't need to give details, just ring and explain that there is a baby left outside and nobody is watching it. They should come ASAP imo. Then maybe she wil get the message?

Hmm

Well I'm sure that's shocked her into bringing the baby inside and finding a baby sitter.
I'm very very surprised SS turned up, they must have been having a quiet day in the office.

KDD:Or maybe someone else had expressed their concerns too so it wasn't an isolated report??

Not read all thread(yet), but OP didn't say that her friend suggested leaving her baby 'overnight', she said she could go out for the evening as the baby slept through the night.
It is wrong though and is something that needs to be addressed one way or another. I've been a single parent since I gave birth 10 years ago and even now, I wouldn't leave my Dc's alone for a couple of hours, leave alone a young baby for an evening.
