to think that some items/services are luxurious and you should not claim poverty whilst simultaneously watching sky and tapping around on the old broadband.

I am getting peeved with hearing how awful their lives are now they have to cut back to eating smart price carrots in a tin etc meanwhile they are subscribed to things that I would not consider a necessity.

Like sky tv and broadband etc.

AIBU?

tinned onion?not slippy and greasy.oh i like them crunchy

expatinscotland · 02/10/2008 20:48

they are great for camping and caravaning.

i saw an ad for them in a BBC Easy Food mag and picked up a few tins for a caravan trip.

nnniiiiicceee.

don't use them otherwise, but tinned veg deffo has its place in the caravan and on the camp stove.

myredcardigan · 02/10/2008 20:48

There you go again with the 'there there love, chill out'

Anyway, my onion feast is 5mins away so I'm off to warm the plates!

PinkTulips · 02/10/2008 20:49

well, broadband and sky are the only luxuries we spend money on so no, i don't see them as unecessary really.

we don't drink, don't go out except once every couple of months to the cinema, we rarely buy clothes for ourselves (like maybe one or two items each a year!) although we don't let the kids go short, i haven't paid to have my hair cut since i was 17 and have never had beauty treatments or my nails done, i get books from the library rather than buying and we never buy magazines or other random things like that.

if we didn't have sky we'd not have any tv at all as reception here is non existant and we're in a very rural area so no cable tv available.

and dp needs broadband for his course so that's not an option to give up although we can't afford decent broadband so just have an O2 mobile thingy that's slower than dial up

you can't reasonably suggest that just because somebody is less well off they should live in utter misery staring at the four walls as penitance for their poverty

ScottishMummy · 02/10/2008 20:50

tinned potato another abomination.

PathofLeastResistance · 02/10/2008 20:51

The government have recently reassessed how poverty is measured by deciding, with a panel of random people, what are necessities for different types of families. Sadly the random people were very ageist and decided that old people deserve less of a social life etc so the poverty line is now drawn differently depending how old you are .

Sounds all wrong to me.

Reckon BB counts as a necessity though but not Sky or tinned carrots.

mamadiva · 02/10/2008 20:53

Pinktulips hope you dont think am being preachy Im just offering some advice.

I think that SKY give you free broadband with a package or at the most it's a tenner couldn't you get that?

mamadiva · 02/10/2008 20:56

LOL scottishmummy yous eem to have an obsession with tinned veg. My gran bought me tinned potatoes, carrots and peas along with loads of tuperware because apparently hey are all neccessaties LOL.

GivePeasAChance · 02/10/2008 20:56

Quite. Broadband is FREE with Sky. Anyone who is paying for broadband AND Sky is a bit strange.

LittleBella · 02/10/2008 20:57

Shouldn't your name be givetinnedpeasachance?

mamadiva · 02/10/2008 21:00

ROFL at Bella. Hows your wine going down? HEHE

I wasn't sure iof it was an offer for new customers or everyone.

If it is I'd actually eb cheaper getting SKY with free BB and phone than what I am paying now just for my BB and phone.

Remotew · 02/10/2008 21:00

I get the broadband in with the phone bill doesn't cost me much. Also I have sky but don't subscribe to it. Digital TV will be the only option for us soon. Gosh you will be saying that a TV is a luxury. YABU.

ScottishMummy · 02/10/2008 21:02

not just tinned vegetables am purveyor of all canned comestibles

LittleBella · 02/10/2008 21:02

I have no wine tonight

am recovering from a social occasion last night. Don't know why I put myself through the hell of socialising

Remotew · 02/10/2008 21:03

Poverty has been defined as not having adequate beds, more than one pair of outdoor shoes, warm outdoor clothing and not being able to afford school trips. DD accused us of being poor today because I told her the school trip she wants to go on at a cost £4,250 is a rip off and we/she cannot go!

Remotew · 02/10/2008 21:04

Meant to say cannot afford it! OOps

PathofLeastResistance · 02/10/2008 21:04

wow- was it a round the world cruise?

PinkTulips · 02/10/2008 21:05

mamadiva, we're in ireland... rural ireland to boot so not many options for broadband at all. the reason we can't afford anything other than mobile is because the only other option is satelite which is ridiculously expensive

i'm not complaining, we're better off than we were 2 years ago or even last year. we have no debts so what comes in is what we have to spend.

my point was simply that if someone chooses to allocate what little spending money they have on broadband and sky but still claims to be poor then i don't see that as a lie. other people go wothout sky but enjoy the odd bottle of wine and still don't have any extra cash at the end of the week, it's all about what little things can make not having alot of spare cash bareable to each individual person.

mamadiva · 02/10/2008 21:05

Bella LOL sorry it was lulumama I was talking to about having a wee dram LOL. Sorry

randomly bumbling on again.

eve totally agree that is a RIP OFF!

LittleBella · 02/10/2008 21:05

£4,250????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For a school trip?

Remotew · 02/10/2008 21:06

No, a month long adventure trip. I said she could go much further for longer on her own.
