to think that some items/services are luxurious and you should not claim poverty whilst simultaneously watching sky and tapping around on the old broadband.

I am getting peeved with hearing how awful their lives are now they have to cut back to eating smart price carrots in a tin etc meanwhile they are subscribed to things that I would not consider a necessity.

Like sky tv and broadband etc.

AIBU?

Butternut squash soup, bloody cheap, roasted with cumin and seasoned and then blitzed!!

expatinscotland · 02/10/2008 20:26

Sky is such a waste.

We had it for a few weeks here because the landlord's still had some weeks on it before his subscription ran out.

It was okay. I liked the Living and home and cooking shows.

But it wasn't essential to us.

I use my broadband to work so it's expensed.

myredcardigan · 02/10/2008 20:26

She's right though, Scottishmummy!
Not only that but you always then come back to answer any critics by telling them to chill or cool down.

I was on a couple of threads recently were you posted in the same vein. The one with the wife swap woman and the one about something the police did on some programme. Both on the same night IIRC. No need really and as Mrs Sh. says, far more unreasonable than either OP.

mamadiva · 02/10/2008 20:27

Flamebat I budget my food too but I find it's to have less waste rather than to keep my BB. As you say though if I couldn't pay my bills and have plenty of food/clothes for my family I would do away with it all in an instant!

ScottishMummy · 02/10/2008 20:28

Ta - wouldn't have thought of that cumin and BNSquash soup.mmmm

expatinscotland · 02/10/2008 20:29

completely off-topic but myredcardigan made me think of this absolutely gorgeous grey cardi that Trinny is wearing on the cover of Good Housekeeping's Sept. issue.

drool!

as you were, ladies

CherryChapstick · 02/10/2008 20:29

Defending my broadband; I signed a 2 year contract last year, there are 10 months left to frun on it, if I cancelled it I'd still have to pay for it. Other people may be in the same boat.
Anyway, I am not one of the people pleeding poverty.

QueenHerod · 02/10/2008 20:29

It's okay Mutt, stress ye not, I have already accepted responsibility for being unreasonable in my post of 20:00

mamadiva I'm not attacking anyone in particular, just the whole "I don't think heating/ food/ shoes/ skyTV/ fax machine/ broadband/ car etc etc. is necessary therefore anyone who has this instead of something I consider more essential is somehow morally defunct mindset.

I jsut find it so terribly vulgar as well as lacking in compassion, unempathetic, stupid, etc. etc.

I am sick of seeing threads like this on MN it is a constant diet of them in the last year or so. Vile. It really does me feel quite sick, seriously. It was a mindset like this that led to the poor laws and the means test. I jsut find it breathtakingly unedifying and I wish that people were a bit more inhibited about showing how mean and vulgar they are. Like rage, a bit more keeping it to yourself in public would be in order imo.

HRHSaintMamazon · 02/10/2008 20:35

I am poor. Im on benefits and we do have to be carefull with money.

however I use the internet daily and it actually saves me more each month than it costs.
i get the telephone at a reduced rate because i have broadband and the Tv package is also reduced because of it.

If the bill comes in and i can't find teh money to pay it then we get disconnected.
most months we havea few days where we are cut off as i have to prioritise and frankly internet is not at the top.

BUT as a single mum who had to move 70 miles from all her friends the internet is my only company once the Dc's are in bed. to me it really is a lifeline.

cory · 02/10/2008 20:37

Simple solution, QueenHerod- feed them tinned carrots!

mamadiva · 02/10/2008 20:38

Queenherod do not fret my friend LOL. You know what MN is like a grudge for about 2 minutes LOL.

We all have our moments were we get pissed off about something and come onto here to vent to get a blardy good bollocking! PSML.

I used to get it all the time everyone HATED me so had to namechange hmm... now I have you thinking. LOL.

ScottishMummy · 02/10/2008 20:38

MRC- quite a wee tab on my posts i cant recall yours.i switch off and switch off

how curious to recall someone else posts so much you are compelled to bring them up on another thread?

apologies if i impacted upon you, on an anonymous discussion board

myredcardigan · 02/10/2008 20:39

Personally, I never rise to anything but you are often a norty poster.

Peachy · 02/10/2008 20:40

only read bits

don't claim to be poor atm but likely to be next year

the only income we will is from dh's part time ebay shop- and, as a sahm and registered carer for 2 sn kids, its also often the only company I ger- 1 summer I didnt speak to an adult face to face (bar dh) for 6 weeks- mn is my sanity!

now sky is a whole different ballgame but then I dont have it and dont want it

expatinscotland · 02/10/2008 20:40

most large shops like Woolie's or even supermarkets will actually have an aisle of merchandise dedicated to filling stockings, so look out for those.

does everyone wrap EVERY filler gift, or just put them in there?

expatinscotland · 02/10/2008 20:42

sorry, that's the second time today i've posted on the wrong thread instead of hte Christmas topic.

i'm just so chuffed about Xmas .

NotAnOtter · 02/10/2008 20:42

ScottishMummy · 02/10/2008 20:43

myredcardigan · 02/10/2008 20:43

No not on me,I don't give a shit TBH. I can take it as I give it out. I just noticed you're a wee bit cruel to poor unsuspecting OPs spouting outrage. So when Mrs Sh mentioned it, I remembered the threads. DH is Scottish so I remember your name.
