Standing up to Pee

My son (3 years old) prefers to pee sitting down. I am trying to persuade him to pee standing up like all the other boys in his nursery.

Any tips on how to achieve this?

P.S. I know he doesn't have to do this just because everyone else is, I genuinely believe it will be easier for him.

DH showed my 3 year old DS. Sometimes he does sometimes he doesn't! (DS that is not DH )

There is a thingy called a 'weeman' that I have seen - basically a small plastic urinal type thing to hang on your toilet for boys to wee in.

Not tried it but might that help? We will be facing this soon (ds1 just started potty training) so interested to hear how you get on...

Another suggestion would be to bribe encourage him to do this with the promise of a chocolate button when he manages. My ds1 will do almost anything for chocolate

We put the choc buttons in a little pot to have after the next meal everytime he manages on the potty / toilet at the mo and it works a treat!

I've four sons and can honestly say I have never encouraged any of them to wee standing up. Even my DH wees sitting down - he saw a program on tv once that showed the wee spraying all over your trousers when you wee and has sat down ever since. Apparently men in Germany tends to sit to wee so I have heard.The spray from weeing standing up also rots the floorboards - my plumber had to replace the ones around my toilet when we had the bathroom done. He was not a fan of standing up to wee either.Having said all of the above, boys will copy others so all mine tend to stand at nursery or school but sit at home (except my 15 yr old who wees over anything !!!).

Mine generally sit at home as they spray otherwise - sometimes. Think they stand at school but up to them on the whole I am not bothered.

Why would you want to encourage standing up (especially for a three year old? My son still sits at nine. He tells me he sometimes stands at school, and I have no idea what he does in public loos, but it is not something he is bothered about. I don't think nursery age children are going to have a problem with your son sitting, if you are worried about teasing. Sitting has big advantages - when my dh is away the bathroom is so much less smelly, as sitting pee-ers get most of the pee in the loo. Having said that dd did once manage to sit at such an angle that her pee jetted out in between the seat and the bowl! ds just stuffs his willy between his legs - it doesn't seem to be very complicated, in fact I think it is easier than the whole "point your penis" target practice routine.

I think you are mad! He will pee everywhere. Enjoy the sitting down while you can and he will want to stand (and wee everywhere) when he realises it is 'the done thing'.

I agree with rolledhedgehog, enjoy it while is lasts because his aim will be rubbish. You constantly have to make sure you are wearing your slippers when you go to the bathroom.

My ds sits as well and he's six. Crazy to encourage otherwise. I can't imagine how it would be EASIER for a 3 yr old to stand on a step and have to hold and direct his willy - just let him sit down!

my ds is 3 and loves weeing standing up at home but will choose to sit down at times his aim is actually really good

you can buy plastic balls you pop in the loo that they aim at never used them for ds but my sis did for her son

Ds always stands up (with no encoragement from me) I am so sick of sitting on pee when I sit down, and it sprays everywhere.

I wish I could convince him to sit.

bubblagirl - thanks for the link, they look like they could be worth a try.

HonoriaGlossop - the reason it is EASIER is that he feels he has to strip off before he sits down, which is fine at home, but when he does this elsewhere and needs a hand to get his trouser back on it isn't ideal!

If you want him to stand then go with the plastic balls.. personally I would use pingpong balls and draw on them with a perminant marker!! it's cheaper and the idea of target balls has been about for years!! ( you don't need to spend a fortune on them.. and ds will enjoy drawing his own targets on!!

But I really wouldn't worry if he sits or stands tbh. sitting is cleaner.. but standing is useful to be able to do sometimes too!

Woudln't he feel the need to strip to pee standing up too? Or at least take his trousers off. I can see that this could be a problem.

Even cheaper than ping pong balls would be a couple of rice crispies in the pan.

My ds is almost 3 and I will not be mentioning about peeing standing up until he does!

erm...why is him standing up or sitting down for a pee so imoportant....be glad your child places the pee where he should....

also, not sure why you would think the whole standing up pee would make things easier....because, if it is that they can pee anywhere....even a child succesfully peeing standing up into a toilet might still can't pee into a bush without wetting their clothes...

I would like to teach my ds to pee standing up so that if he needs to go and we're a long way from a loo he can just stand and go. Rather than faffing about with the portable potty that we have at the moment and is already almost too little for him.

Take all of your advice though that it might be easier to discourage this at home although I am sure when he sees his daddy doing it (who either has amazing aim or cleans up after himself ) he will want to copy

honest ali....standing up peeing into a bush or whatnot, seems to be a completely different entity then peeing standing up pee in a toilet....

maybe a man could shed light on that fact, lol

alicet - I pick up my lad to wee in the bushes (and push is willy down!) - get him to bend his knees as if he was a girl -

otherwise standing up is a nightmare until they are at least 3 and a bit,

and it will stop him getting wet shoes/trousers etc

I wouldn't mess with it at all. Just leave him be and he'll choose his own way in time. My 4 year old DS1 sometimes stands but mostly sits. It seems pretty easy to me.

my 3 charge prefers to sit down, but nursery are teaching them to stand

its all very well if you have a low toilet, but if a high one, then the poor boy cant wallop his willy over the rim

he did wee standing up the other week, and his little friend went in to toilet as well,DC turned round, while still peeing, friend got feet peed on
