to expect a "self cleaning oven" to actually be clean all by itself

I saved up for blardy ages in order to afford the oven i wanted.
i got it. one of its advertised feratures was its self cleaning ability.

now i have had it for about a year now and i have had to clean it out at least half a dozen times (ok im a bit of a slattern)

why is it not clean all buy itself?
and how does a self cleaning oven work exactly? is there a mini maid hidden away or something/

i think you have to put it on at a really high temperature for a while for the self cleaning thing to work.

never done it here either.

bumpybecky · 26/09/2008 23:29

YANBU if you think cleaning an oven 6 times a year = bit of a slattern

think mine's been cleaned once in that time....

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 26/09/2008 23:34

I had a self-cleaning oven.

I moved house without ever having cleaned it.

I plead ignorance. It's a Man Job anyway, isn't it?

I wrote you a reply earlier, but deleted as thought you were being funny!

I have 3 Pyro-clean settings (dirty, dirtier and dirtiest) I have to remove the shelves (and light bulb as it always pops) and set it.

It locks itself for quite a while (hour +)and then unlocks when cooler. I justt wipe up ash with a sponge.

QuintessentialShadows · 26/09/2008 23:41

Oh! I need to add pyro thingy to my spreadsheet!

HRHSaintMamazon · 26/09/2008 23:46

Think i will have to dig out my instruction book and see what it says.
it doesn't seem to have any special nobs or buttons on it for cleaning though.

so this self cleaning lark means it just gets so hot all the gunk is burned off?

Dragonbutter · 26/09/2008 23:47

i think so, but i can't remember what you're supposed to do.

marmadukescarlet · 26/09/2008 23:49

Yep, it gets really hot so all food deposits are turned to ash.

Which one do you have?

My icons for it are on the grill/fan/non-fan/whatever knob.

HRHSaintMamazon · 26/09/2008 23:54

no idea as i bought it second hand. its a Stoves one if that helps at all.
