live in social housing.
there are 2 now.
haven't people got anything better to do, than to slag other people of and judge then,
I live in a HA because there is no other type of housing that we can get, that has the disabled access we need. and we have a lovely van.
why do people judge others when they know fuck all about their circs???????????????????????

i just found out today some friends of ours have gotten one of the new shared ownership properties in the next village after two years on the waiting list.

he's a swimming instructor and personal trainer, she's a teacher.

hardly scum of the earth, just can't afford the high prices of housing.

i'm SO happy for them. they spent 2 years on the waiting list. their younger son is a good friend to DD1, they're hardly bringing up their kids to be ASBO criminal gangbangers.

i think a lot of people who got worked hard (because that's it, it's never down to good fortune or circumstances) got lucky don't realise that things have changed a lot as far as housing and prices in the last decade and that plenty of professional people can't afford to buy suitable accommodation. of course, it's all their fault for chosing professions like teaching or law enforcement and they just don't work hard enough .

i thought i'd left that sort of lazy, outdated mentality behind in America.

guess not!

FAQ · 22/09/2008 16:05

I've noticed there's be a lot of "judding" threads on many things when it comes to money recently - not just housing, but the lifestyle choices that people make (on or off benefits) - I can only think it's because of the credit crunch - which is affecting everyone, but everyone likes to believe that Joe Blogs down the street is doing ok because of x,y,z.......

nametaken · 22/09/2008 16:06

oh expat I thought it was just a british thing, snobbery. Is it the same in the States then. Is the american equivalent of social housing "the projects"?

expatinscotland · 22/09/2008 16:06

'the higher you climb, the longer you've got to fall . . . '

i've seen it, too, FAQ. i think lean times bring out the worst in some people and the best in some. but i have to say, having lived on a council estate once, there were some of the kindest, most understanding, compassionate and generous people around - a lot more than i ran into in Twatrose.

Tortington · 22/09/2008 16:07

oh social housing types don't know a corriander seed from their cumin.

they all have huge plasma tv's

and their kids have their hair buzzed.

they all have brand new cars

and everyone else works for a living - except those in social housing.

Foxy800 · 22/09/2008 16:09

I think you are right, there are alot of threads on jdging about various things to do with money.

To be honest if someone I didnt know saw my ha house for whatever reason they would think we are doing really well for ourselves when in fact we are just plodding along ok like most people these days but we have chosen to go with out things for ourselves to make sure our daughter doesnt and so we can give her a nice home to live in but that s our choice noone elses.

So to the many judgemental people on whatever subject it may be please dont judge others till you know the full story.

expatinscotland · 22/09/2008 16:10

'oh expat I thought it was just a british thing, snobbery. Is it the same in the States then. Is the american equivalent of social housing "the projects"?'

it's not so much snobbery in housing there, nametaken.

there are not many council estates there, certainly not like you find here and only in large cities.

the government allocated social housing much, much differently.

for one, 'buy to let' private landlords are quite scarce. most privately rented housing is in the form of an 'apartment complex', which is basically a large campus of buildings, usually 2-3 stories high, of flats owned by massive corporations or conglomerates.

they have to allow a certain percentage of 'section 8' tenants - low income.

that way, it's far, far more integrated than you see in the UK.

but there is a prevalent mentality that hard work is the cure for everything adn that if you are not financially successful in life, it is because of a personal fault of your own and therefore in some respects your fault.

they put a huge emphasis on work and work longer hours on the whole than in the UK.

it's expected of everyone that work comes first.

YANBU

I'm not keen on the amount of judgemental threads that have appeared recently based on different people's lifestyle choices (maternity pay) cars or housing. What has it got to do with anyone else.

BTW: I own my own house and my next door neighbour's 2 teenage boys both have very long police records and the one down from them sells drugs, so it doesn't matter where you live or what type of housing you live in.

P.S: Can we see a photo of the lovely van?

mashedup · 22/09/2008 16:19

I live in a HA house and love it. Where I live is a mix of homeowners and tenants but we get along fine. I know a homeowner who keeps his house and garden a tip as he says he can't be evicted.
There will always be a stigma about social housing, but I can't afford to buy a house, and at least I have a home. I feel sorry for the homeless with the winter coming.

OneBoyOneGirl · 22/09/2008 16:21

We are currently hoping to get somewhere from the HA as we have no other choice. Cannot understand why people would judge or look down on people in this situation at all.

Some people, no matter how hard they are trying, do have just plain bad luck - it doesn't mean they do not work hard to help themselves.

pagwatch · 22/09/2008 16:22

am I allowed to judge people who think that their van is so much better than any van I could ever own.

van snobs

van snobs

hecate · 22/09/2008 16:23

No, you are not. It is very annoying. But it's their problem, not ours. They are snobs and they are ignorant and they live in the world according to the daily mail.

jesuswhatnext · 22/09/2008 16:40

please correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought a certain amount of affordable housing is aimed at teachers, nurses, police etc - not really scum imho.

another thing that bugs me is that people seem to feel the need to explain WHY they need help with housing - DON'T - it is YOUR business only, damn all to do with anyone else and nothing to be ashamed of

jesuswhatnext · 22/09/2008 16:41

i am finding the thought of'van' oneupmanship quite appealing though

rebelmum1 · 22/09/2008 16:43

Well the only thread I saw merely questioned the fairness of the system. Should someone who can afford a 60k car benefit from having their rent subsidised when most people who are not subsidised cannot afford to put petrol in their car. I think that subsidies should only be available for people who really need it. It's perfectly reasonable to question a the system, no one is mud-slinging at people who occupy social housing.

Mrshall · 22/09/2008 16:43

I want a van...

Peachy · 22/09/2008 16:48

I didnt see the one rebelmum did- did see the nasty thread though

YANBU 2shoes. I grew up in one, Muma d dad keep it lovely with rose gardens etc. I feel a damned site more secure than the last road we lived in, I can tell you, that was all owner occupier. I used lie awake at night listening to the joyriders. It was the same town.

like ExPat the security of a council house seems a dream away (rent review / inspection Thursday- always the chance that we'll be served notice). I hope we'll by one day but it's hard to save on carers allowance!

jesuswhatnext · 22/09/2008 16:48

rebelmum - i know a guy who drives a very expensive range rover thing, replaced every year at vast expensive, he and his family live in a council house - he is a gamekeeper (usually recognised as a fairly low paid job) and the car belongs to his employer. - why should he explain his circs and bank balance to anyone?
