To think smoking should be BANNED???

Mum2OliverJames · 16/09/2008 17:27

Or it at least should be taken back into the pubs where it doesnt effect me, they cant all sit together in their deseise ridden smoke.

I am SOOO sick of walking behind someone who is smoking or walking through their putrid cloud of smoke, i hate it for my DS to, the smell makes me SICK, and i mean it actually makes me feel like i want to vomit!

Why cant smokers just realise how much they stink, you can smell a smoker a mile off.

I also hate how when someone speaks to you in the street, if they are smoking they will put their cigerette behind their back whilst talking to DS, like that stops him from breathing in you cancer fumes!!!

I think if someone is going to smoke they should at least do it where its not going to have an effect on anybody else (like in their own homes)

i dont think iabu, i think the smokers are v. much bu to expect everybody else to put up with their disgustingness - i think its v selfish.

Because you're the one with the problem coping with someone elses legal activity. If someone says to you they find your perfume unpleasant should you move?

mummyloveslucy · 17/09/2008 12:29

Oh and I have a huge problem with people stinking too, I mean B.O. In this day and age there is no need for it. Have a shower for hevens sake, or at least don't sit next to me on the bus.

onager · 17/09/2008 12:29

I answered what I assumed you meant to say then. Annoying not having an edit button isn't it.

Saying you don't wear perfume is dodging the point since you may well have other habits that people dislike. I'll take it that you couldn't really answer that then.

DaphneMoon · 17/09/2008 12:32

I don't think smoker are condoning what they do, we all know, smoker or non smoker that it is bad for you, however it is addictive.

But, I will reiterate what I said on another thread about smoking.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD YOUR TAXES IF SMOKING WAS UTTERLY BANNED TOMORROW, THE GOVERNMENT GETS 9.3 BILLION FROM TAX ON CIGS. WHERE ARE THEY GOING TO GET THIS FROM - PETROL!?

Before you come back with the NHS figures for treating smoking related diseases. It is no-where near 9.3 billion. It is 1.5 Billion.

southeastastra · 17/09/2008 12:39

this is quite interesting if you can be arsed to read it

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 17/09/2008 12:48

i cannot stand the smell of beef crisps. it makes me feel physically sick and when i was pg it made me actually sick.

cut grass makes me very ill im allergic.

the smell of over powering perfumes/hairspray/after shave also makes me feel ill

aibu to think that people should only be allowed to mow their lawns at night when im in bed and only eat beef crisps inside their house and should not be allowed hairspray etc?

Remotew · 17/09/2008 13:40

Read that southeastatra. People find it hard to believe that some smokers can still be fit. The only advantage of being a smoker is that they weigh less than non smokers in general. Bad but true.

To all you lot that have agreed with the OP. Smokers got push outside and guess what we don't even mind, but to now have a go about this is a bit bloody rich so stop your moaning.

DaphneMoon · 17/09/2008 13:43

South interesting article. Football teams years ago all smoked. I expect the last time we won the world cup they all had a fag afterwards.

mumof2222222222222222boys · 17/09/2008 14:39

I hate smoking, always have, and was delighted by the ban. However I have to agree with OP and Riven and surprisingly few others, that it is irritating and unpeasant to have to breathe in other people's smoke when I go out for fresh air at lunch time / to the park with the children.

mayorquimby · 17/09/2008 14:53

there's still quitea few athletes (well footballers and rugby players, i'm not too clued in on athletics etc) still smoke so it definitely is possible to be fit and smoke.
brian o driscoll, wayne rooney, zinedine zidane are just a few high profile examples.

oh i'm a non-smoker by the way so it's not smoking propoganda from me,just adding to those above who were talking about athletes of the past smoking.

Dalrymps · 17/09/2008 15:21

abouteve - I am one of the 'lot' who agree's with the OP.

I'm glad you don't mind having to go outside cause it should have happened years ago. Scary to think how many people have already had their health affected by passive smoking.

I don't think it's 'a bit blody rich' to have a go about having to breathe smoke in whilst walking down the street. In fact I don't care where I am, I don't want to breathe it in.

All the smokers who have posted on this thread are just being defensive. You all need to understand that no matter what you say to justify it, smoking is a disgusting, harmfull smelly habbit.

If you're all stupid enough to do it that is up to you but you need to understand that we don't want to join in with you by breathing it in.

By the way, I used to be a smoker and never understood how bloody stinky it was till I agve up and got my sense of smell back.

Remotew · 17/09/2008 15:25

If you read the thread you will find that a lot of non smokers have disagreed with the OP. You used to be a smoker so don't call other people who do stupid!

I have given up in the past and might do again but would never look down on people who continue to smoke.

Dalrymps · 17/09/2008 15:30

It is stupid. I was stupid for smoking. Deciding to smoke is a stupid idea and I wish I never had especially as it made my asthma 10 times worse and I ended up in A and E on one occasion.

I don't look down on people who smoke, I pity them that they are wasting time, money and their health on something that has no benefit.

I have read the post, I am talking to the people who have not agreed with the OP.

People can argue that other things 'smell bad' but things like perfume don't cause cancer.

Traffic fumes are bad but driving performs a function, it gets you from A to B. Smoking does not perform a function at all.

mayorquimby · 17/09/2008 15:37

" something that has no benefit. "

makes you look cool = benefit

Remotew · 17/09/2008 15:38

Yes I've read Allan Carr and was very sucessful on it, quit for a long time but it obviously didn't get through enough as I started again. I wasn't addicted anymore just missed it.

True what they say 'once a smoker, always a smoker'. Frightening really.

janx · 17/09/2008 15:40

Dalrymps - hi . Just tried to cat you - have finally found those maternity trousers, but can't find your email - do you want to email me

Mummywheel · 17/09/2008 15:47

Mum2oj I think you are very brave, but do see your point!

onager · 17/09/2008 15:51

Nor does smelling someone's smoke outside.

The proof that it does inside is flimsy enough and really only applies to spending years or decades in a room full of smoke. Outside (which is what we are discussing) it's just 'something you don't like'

I have to laugh at the irony. The (indoor) smoking ban going through and all those anti-smokers clapping and cheering "that'll teach em to do things that I don't like"

And then discovering that it means more people outside smoking
