To think smoking should be BANNED???

Mum2OliverJames · 16/09/2008 17:27

Or it at least should be taken back into the pubs where it doesnt effect me, they cant all sit together in their deseise ridden smoke.

I am SOOO sick of walking behind someone who is smoking or walking through their putrid cloud of smoke, i hate it for my DS to, the smell makes me SICK, and i mean it actually makes me feel like i want to vomit!

Why cant smokers just realise how much they stink, you can smell a smoker a mile off.

I also hate how when someone speaks to you in the street, if they are smoking they will put their cigerette behind their back whilst talking to DS, like that stops him from breathing in you cancer fumes!!!

I think if someone is going to smoke they should at least do it where its not going to have an effect on anybody else (like in their own homes)

i dont think iabu, i think the smokers are v. much bu to expect everybody else to put up with their disgustingness - i think its v selfish.

Peeps, OP still hasn't given up arguing. Should we assume she is a troll and having a laugh?

She must be. No one is this much of a busy body are they? Please tell me no one is this bad.

can I just point out that the smell of popcorn makes me feel SICK and I HATE it and I thing it should be banned EVERYWHERE, especially in the CINEMA when I'm trying to have a nice time watching a film without being subjected to OTHER PEOPLE'S POPCORN

Perhaps I should start a thread...

Why cant popcorn eaters just realise how much they stink, you can smell a popcorn eater a mile off.

I'm also asthmatic, but fortunately don't react to cigarette smoke as badly as thebecster does. However, contact with cat or dog hairs make me break out in lumpy red spots coupled with unbearable itching - and I've had to be nebulised for the severity of an asthma attack after sitting in a room where an animal's been.

I therefore propose that all dogs and cats should be banned at once! - because after all, the world is all about my personal convenience and comfort - isn't it?

Peachy · 17/09/2008 11:26

i hate smoking. i have an issue with a heghtened sense of smell and it's a particularly noxious odour for me

nonetheless I do think that the smoking laws are now where they should be. I should be able to go out etc without sitting in a smoky room- and I can. the stats show smokers are increasingly giving up, and i suspect the majority would like to but are struggling.

smoking is not the same as alcohol btw: ciggarettes are the only legal substance which can be fatal if used in the manner intended

yabu- grown ups get to decide. us non smokers have a good deal now

mummyloveslucy · 17/09/2008 11:34

I don't smoke, and think it's awful when people smoke around their children and when pregnant. I know it's an addiction, and I've never been adicted to anything so I can only imagine how hard it is to quit. I do think people should smoke outside or out of an open window if they have children around.
I held a 3 month old baby the other day who's head smelt of smoke. Surely every smoker must know this is bad.
There is a lot of help to quit now, so I hope more parents will get help.
I know it's hard, but do it for your children.

DaphneMoon · 17/09/2008 11:47

Squonk: PMSL at the popcorn.

I hate the smell of salt and vinegar crips and most "smelly" crips. I also hate it at the cinema when said crisps are being eaten near me. Also how come you cannot go on a bus without some child munching on a bag of smelly crips.

Peachy you are so wrong about the alchohol thing. Alcohol also can kill you over a period of time even if used in moderation.
It too causes cancer.

expatinscotland · 17/09/2008 11:49

'Alcohol also can kill you over a period of time even if used in moderation.
It too causes cancer.'

It can also turn the user into a violent person or driver who kills or harms others.

With all too frightening frequency these days.

50% of all A&E visits are alcohol-related, as are a little over 50% of all motor-vehicle accidents. That means where a user has harmed himself and/or others.

Hardly harmless to others.

stillstanding · 17/09/2008 11:50

Squonk, I am not sure I get your argument. I don't think the OP is being reasonable per se but just having a bit of a rant as do we all in AIBU. I do think she has a point tho in the sense that smoking does affect others and intrudes on others. If someone wants to smoke they are quite entitled to do so but only to the extent that they are not eroding others' rights not to. The popcorn analogy is just specious but perhaps you know that ....

That is my point exactly Expat re alcohol. It is as dangerous as cigs if not more as there are many more reasons that alcohol can be used to endanger others.

Even being an ex smoker I am getting sick of the anti smoking brigade. How an earth has anyone got an argument about breathing in cig smoke at a bus stop, have you any idea how much pollution you are breathing in standing next to a bloody bus FGS.

onager · 17/09/2008 12:09

I'm sure the popcorn one was made up , but in what way is it different to smoking. We're not talking about health risk because it's outside. We're talking about 'not liking' the smell)
And the dog/cat point was even better since the allergy reaction is harmful.

onager · 17/09/2008 12:13

And I completely agree about the alcohol. If 50% of all A&E visits are alcohol-related then we smokers are paying a fortune to fund the NHS just so you drinkers can misuse it

fryalot · 17/09/2008 12:13

I was being a tad facetious tbh, but in all honesty, I cannot abide the smell of popcorn and it really does make me feel quite sick.

Of course I wouldn't suggest that cinemas ban popcorn just because I don't like it.

Work out my position on smoking from that if you like

fryalot · 17/09/2008 12:15

oh, and alcohol is the 5th biggest drug related killer, after heroin, cocaine and barbiturate misuse.

Tobacco comes in in a pathetic tenth place

I repeat, btw, I do not smoke.

DaphneMoon · 17/09/2008 12:16

Why should the popcorn one be made up, there are many smells I don't like as I mentioned on a previous thread. Some smells make people feel ill and that is harmful in itself. Another smell I don't like is Tomato Ketchup, it positively make me want to vomit. I have to look away before I can put it on my DS plate. I am not trying to be funny here I really do not like the smell of it. I'm not trying to ban it though. Yes smoking is bad for you, but standing outside is hardly forcing people to breathe it in surely!

I didn't mean to dismiss the popcorn one. I just meant that I asssumed it was a joke to make a point. But I liked it because it was a good example.

I think smokers are always full of excuses, and reasond why it's not that bad. IT IS BAD !!. My Nan smokes twenty a day and her constant ratteling cough is always due to a cold, the damp ect. I wish she'd quit before it's too late. I do feel sorry for you smokers becauuse I've seen what smoking can do to you first hand. I work in a hospital.
I urge you all to seek help.

onager · 17/09/2008 12:21

Riven you have the same righrs I have if I don't like your perfume, popcorn smell etc. You have the right to go away.
Possibly to a desert island if the smell you dislike is one you encounter frequently.

PuzzleRocks · 17/09/2008 12:22

Aah Squonk, but how do you feel about people on benefits eating popcorn?
