matildax · 15/09/2008 14:28

hello, i am having a bit of a 'moment'
i go on a holiday for 1 week next week with my dp and 2 of my dcs (it has taken us nearly 3 years to pay for this, as we are not well off, so its a huge deal for me that we all enjoy ourselves)
now i know its a family holiday, and im not 18 anymore, but im worried about what a state i will look on the beach... and if i will get laughed at, which will upset my dd2.
i know that when i go to the beach, i rarely look at other people (too busy running after kids!!) and i am packing sarongs etc... im just scared i get harpooned!! lol joke.
im posting on here, just to ask, do you look at people and think oh lord shes fat, or do you not really care. (im a size 18-20) and have been trying for weeks to shift some weight, it just doesnt come off, i walk daily, and wouldnt say i was mega unfit, but still very very large.
i suppose i just need a bit of encouragement, as my sister called me a a fat loser at the weekend, and i think ive taken this to heart, and feel slightly upset, instead of mega excited!!

tell me to piss of if you want, maybe im just a little bit paranoid at the moment.

and i know its about the kids having a a good time, i just dont feel very good about myself, and really want to snap out of it!!! (i dont want this to taint what should be a lovely carefree fun time for us all)
xx

If I even notice larger ladies on a beach (much bigger than you) I only think how much they must love their children to derobe and get out on a beach, and think them courageous. However when I've been bigger, post babies, I feel dreadful the whole time up to the point where I'm enjoying myself on a beach.
Your kids will havesuch a great time that it will wash any worries away.

MmeLindt · 15/09/2008 17:53

Bravissimo have a sale on if you have one nearby.

I am so glad that you are feeling happy about yourself again.

matildax · 15/09/2008 18:09

thanks Mmelindt. i will have a look on wednesday.
sycamoretree, your post was spot on. i think i have had too much going on in my head to even consider climbing that mountain. im hoping that this holiday gives me confidence, and that i will eventually become happier and healthier for both me and my kids.

i think i 'let myself go', because i was put down a alot, you do start to believe it.

i start a course soon, through my gp, called lighten up, its free, and you get to work out with personal trainers, and you have talks fromdiet experts etc. and more importantly i will be with others who are the same as me, so im sure going to that course will be beneficial.
gotta go its bathtime
bye for now, and thanks again
xx

if your a bit unsure wear a maxi

thats like a really long summery dress

MrsMattie · 15/09/2008 18:14

Hi matildax. I honestly never judge other women's bodies on the beach / at the pool. You are there to have fun, relax, enjoy yourself and generally chill out in your swimsuit and get a tan - f**k what other people think! It isn't about how perfect you look and if anybody dares to make you feel uncomfortable give them the dirtiest look you are capable of giving and swan off in the direction of cocktails and laughs. Holidays are for enjoying yourself.

cocolepew · 15/09/2008 18:19
  1. Never speak to your sister again.

The confidence goes a long way! Last year on the beach I noticed a couple in their 30's, the woman was curvy size 18-ish and attractive, but hid all day under a tankini with a skirt bit attached and a kaftan on top virtually all the time, plus they always chose beach loungers on the very back row.

One day though, they arrived wreathed in smiles, all jokey and laughing, went straight for the front row, she was wearing an ordinary bikini (a well fitted one) with a pretty sarong, having ditched the skirt bit and the kaftan and HONESTLY I thought it was a different couple.

It was only her beach bag that made me realise it was the same people. I was genuinely amazed and realised my attention had been drawn to her body language, not her actual body. That sounds a bit new-agey I know, but it's true.

I'm not 100% happy with my body either but there were so many shapes and sizes on the beach (including the men!!!) it would have been impossible to pick me out of the crowd for being any different!

Hope you enjoy your hols - have a great time and enjoy every moment x

PinkChick · 15/09/2008 20:17

oh if we wernt going away so soon after you could have laoned my maxi's..absolute godsend!

also ive found best place for variety of tankinis was JJB sports!, mine is and 18 and VERY big and well covering...was £14!..also the kaftan type beachwear come up roomy, i got 2 diff ones in size 12 as theyre so loose and flowy..have fun shopping

Salleroo · 16/09/2008 09:03

PS, dont have any contact with that bitch your sister before your hols.

The best bit is the excitement leading up to the holidays and that buzz every time you think about it.

PPS it's probably best not to have any contact with her afterwards either. She has serious issues and taking them out on you is plain nasty. Fu(k her... what are sisters for if not sticking up for one and other and a bit of positive reinforcement when you need it.

CostaRicanCod · 16/09/2008 09:06

i am a FIRM beliver in everyone enJOYING themsleves on a beach.
i haev a keen eye and i also haev a mate who i go to the beach wiht who is a size 24.

the rules are

  1. confidence, no twatting around wiht sarongs
  1. colour find a colour of beach wear that suits oyu not black or some dingy green
  1. cut take a blunt freind ? wiht oyu shoping. try on TOPS first if bikini- ing, or oyu may find an all in one fab. accessorize it with a nice bag and sunglasses. and a cover up if needs be
haev a great hol

( oh and rememebr it all looks worse in a chancgin room)

CostaRicanCod · 16/09/2008 09:07

matildax if you tell us what your best and worst bits are and what colours suit we can help you find stuff on line

Portofino · 16/09/2008 09:10

I thought you were talking about me originally!!!

I too am off this weekend - it's great isn't it!

I shall be baring my bits with impunity - and sod everyone else. I'm more embarrassed at being white than large at the moment. I just know that everyone else on the Cote D'Azur will be bronzed and lovely - and I am white and spotty

Hope you have an excellent time. This time next week, I hope to be laying on my sunbed, with a handsome waiter bringing me a coffee, and DH building sandcastles....

Ripeberry · 16/09/2008 09:15

The OP's sister sounds like a very insecure, jealous person.
Hey girl, if she gives you grief, challenge her to an arm wrestle or another feat of strengh.
She may be skinnier than you, but YOU have the strenght and she is just a punny person.
I'd rather have muscles and a bit of weight than be a skinny witch!

largeginandtonic · 16/09/2008 09:16

I went on holiday to Center Parks when dc#5 was only 4 months old. Lots of pool time.

I was a little worried about it, i trawled the shops for the perfect one piece (bikini was a huge no, no) It was like torture! It didnt help that i took a friend with me who just said "ooh lovely, get that one" everytime i tried one on. It was so unhelpful as i could see some where not for me.

Anyway i got something and felt sort of ok, spent the entire holiday sucking in stomach (pointless) and barely gave a second glance to anyone else there. Which is i'm sure how everyone else was.

I had a full body scrub and waxed everything before i went and tbh that made me feel better than any one piece i bought!

Go have fun, your sister sounds charming btw.

CostaRicanCod · 16/09/2008 09:17

lgat hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how are oyur eyes?>

Ripeberry · 16/09/2008 09:19

Yes, and also have a great holiday. The only time i've ever noticed someone at the beach or by the pool was when i was 17yrs old and i did not realise that coloured people could get a suntan (very naive i know).

Jeepney · 16/09/2008 09:21

I am sure no one will notice how you look so long as you are confident and wear a flattering swimsuit!! Have a fab time, your sister sounds awful!!

pigleto · 16/09/2008 09:22

I occasionaly see someone large (I mean size 26 plus) on the beach in a tiny bikini. Honestly I just think; "I wish I had that confidence". Whatever you wear, wear it with pride.

You are a fantastic woman with a wonderful family who has bought and paid for her holiday with blood, sweat and tears. So have a great one.

CostaRicanCod · 16/09/2008 09:25

no you see i disgaree
i htink a tin bikini is goign to look shit.

largeginandtonic · 16/09/2008 09:30

Spidery am addicted. I blame you.

largeginandtonic · 16/09/2008 09:31

No bikini! Too exposed, you will spend all your time sucking in. Is exhausting.
