to think that dd1's school should not make her do pe in her knickers and vest when she has pe kit just because some kids didnt bring theirs?

sorry i know im starting a lot of threads about dds school but its my first time as a school mum so forgive me.

anyhow its not me who thinks its unreasonable i didnt even know about it untill i heard some moms complaining to the teacher that in the first week all the dc were made to do pe in the undies because a few children had not brought in their pe kit. those who did have pe kit did it in their undies too so that no one was left out i suppose.

they are only four and five and surely four and five year olds love being half naked i dont see a problem with it myself.

what do all think? i asked dh but he irritated me going on about peadophiles and how the teacher might be a perve and thats why she did it so i stopped listening.

Ask him why, if he thinks the teacher is a perve, is he sending his daughter to school?

No, I don't care, sorry. Vest and pants fine in my opinion.

2shoes · 11/09/2008 22:20

what an odd thing to do...
and your dh was a bit odd as well.

pudding25 · 11/09/2008 22:21

YANBU. I am a yr 1 teacher. If a kid forgets their PE kit, they do it in their school clothes. Ridiculous idea to make them all do it in their underwear. Get the ones with PE kit to wear it, the ones without PE kit to do it in uniform. No child should be made to do PE in their undies.
Some teachers are so goddam crap.

constancereader · 11/09/2008 22:23

what an extremely odd reaction from your dh

thats what i thought. i dont think that he really believes that the teacher is a perve but was trying to point out thats what the other moms mays have thought. which is even stranger imo. why would anyone think such a thing?

OP posts:
theSuburbanDryad · 11/09/2008 22:25

Surely if all the kids are in their underwear it makes the whole process useless? It's the embarrassment of being made to do PE in their underwear which makes them remember their PE kit next time?

Reginaphilangy · 11/09/2008 22:25

Actually i think its rather a strange thing to do, and no, i wouldn't like it. My dd doesn't wear a vest and i don't like the thought of her doing PE in her knickers (nothing to do with paedophiles btw, what an odd think to say ) just that i don't think its particularly nice for her.

Why didn't the teacher just let them all go barefoot in the hall if she didn't want anyone to get upset?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 11/09/2008 22:28

i think the ones who didnt have vests did it in their knickers and school t shirts. i cant imagine any of the boys having vests? or am i wrong there? i dont have any boys.

i suppose they thought that school skitrs and trousers werent appropriate and may get dirty as dd said they were wriggling on the floor pretending to be snakes.

I remember we all did PE in our vest and knickers when I was in infants.

MsHighwater · 11/09/2008 22:30

When I was in Primary 1, 2 & 3 we routinely did PE in our knickers - we had special blue PE knickers.

Good grief, I feel old!

FAQ · 11/09/2008 22:32

wouldn't bother me -

theSuburbanDryad · 11/09/2008 22:33

I can remember the burning shame of being made to do PE in my underwear - and I didn't wear a vest so I had to do it in just my knickers. We used to get changed for PE in the classroom and then have to walk past about 50 other classrooms (well, probably not, but that's what it felt like) to get to the assembly hall.

I remember feeling like I wanted to curl up and die at the shame of it all!!

FAQ · 11/09/2008 22:34

"Surely if all the kids are in their underwear it makes the whole process useless?"

~Surely it's the opposite - if all the children are in their underwear then no child is going to feel embarssed/different from everyone else........and do we really want our 4/5yr olds to be feeling picked on when they've barely got through the school doors for the first time???

JLo2 · 11/09/2008 22:35

Personally I don't like the idea of any children doing PE in the vest and knickers. I thought it had gone out with the arc until I visited a local well respected school fairly recently as a prospective parent. A group of us were shown round and there were the reception class doing PE in their underwear for all of us to see. I didn't send my children there!
I'm not sure if I can think of a good reason for not liking it, other than the fact that you wouldn't find me down the gym in my undies!

MsPontipine · 11/09/2008 22:35

YES I remember just running around in my pants! How awful. I can't see the point of the little ones changing anything other than plimmies - by the time they're all ready bet it's time to get changed back again!

queenbea · 11/09/2008 22:36

of course boys wear vests, then they grow up and wear vests as outer garments, then they wear them as vests again, then they get old and wear string vests. It wouldn't have occurred to me to mind as it was standard practice 'in my day' and I didn't know it wasn't anymore. ds started school today and had pe. I could have quite easily forgotten his kit with it being the first day and would be grateful to the teacher for not making him stand out for my incompetence.

theSuburbanDryad · 11/09/2008 22:36

Yeah - but if you want to make small children remember their PE kit in future, then burning shame is the way forward IMO.

If you make all the kids wear their pants and vests (or not!) then it makes the whole thing pointless. Kids might as well have been in their school uniform, as someone else said.

FAQ · 11/09/2008 22:37

Urban - x posts with you - so bearing in mind that you were really mortified by the whole process (obviously you'll have stood out "in the crowd" so to speak) - wouldn't it have been better for you if everyone else was wearing the same?

HarryAndRon · 11/09/2008 22:37

hand up here to also doing PE in vest and knickers.........right up until I was 10!

snowleopard · 11/09/2008 22:37

I loathe that completely stupid idea that if one or a few misbehave, you punish the whole class. Doh! What is the thinking behind it? That the rest of the class will pay the offenders back by ganging up on them? Excellent. Or is it to show children that they might as well not bother getting it right, as they'll suffer anyway? Arrrggh.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 11/09/2008 22:38

i seem to remember routinely doing pe in underwear just because thats what we wore. vests, knickers and plimsoles i cant remeber ever having special t shirt and shorts for anything but netball practise.

if i had known about it it wouldnt have occured to me to be mad untill i heard the other mums. but then dd is often in her knicks and vests. as soon as we get anywhere she strips, she spends ages in the changing rooom at her dancing school rolling on the floor in her knickers

reception class kids not having their PE kit in the first week or so of school - being PUNISHED?? Surely it is the parents who haven't brought the kit in - the children are only just 5 at most, the vast majority of them couldn't have read the information requiring a kit and gone out and brought it.
Now making the parents do PE in their undies...
