to complain about the unhygienic water fountain at school?

School's standards of hygiene leave MUCH to be desired.

Current annoyance is that DD's new classroom has a water fountain which has very low water pressure and to drink any water, the children have to put their lips around the outlet.

They use it all day. I think it is horrible.

AIBU to tell her to stop using it and to complain to the school?

Look here is a picture!

They rest their lips on the round metal part. It's GROSS

Oh yes definitely complain. This is very unhygienic. There is a formal memo on the wall in our work kitchen (on NHS property) stating that the food hygiene regulations (of which there are many) also relate to water and ice

Could you ring Environmental Health and ask hypothetically what they feel about this?

In the meantime send your dd in with a water bottle and refill it at home each day.

Perhaps you could also ask the school if they feel it is acceptable for the whole class to share one set of cutlery at lunchtime? - because this is what they are in effect doing with this fountain! Yuk.

I remmber these from school

bleuughh

I suppose they could swap germs etc but kids do that all the time

SorenLorensen · 08/09/2008 20:52

Ugh, that is gross - and will ensure that every single bug spreads in an even more wildfirey fashion than buggy things already do in schools.

I would complain, actually - and send dd with a water-bottle in the meantime.

It is YUCK

I have looked it up and it is supposed to be a 'hygeinic' model

I think the water is supposed to come UP high though

Definately complain. Is it a design fault or are they meant to suck the water out with their lips around it?

morningpaper · 08/09/2008 20:55

I can't find any pictures of the fountain 'working' so I don't know HOW it is supposed to work. It is a terrible design.

i've seen lots of em. Normally the water shoots out quite high, about 4 or 5 inches away from the metal bit and you would just catch it in your mouth without touching anything.

However, if you say the water pressure is low then it won't shoot up high like it should. It sounds to me as though it has been installed incorrectly.

Thanks nametaken, that would make sense

Argh how can any SENSIBLE ADULT look at that and not realise it is OBVIOUSLY WRONG
