I just don't seem to be able to find the time or energy Roll on term time.

SGB - it's TRUE about the dust - I hate dusting because a) it makes me sneeze (I do use the dust attachment on the vacuum but still) and b) I notice when it gets dusty again.

If I leave it, I don't care until some bastard body touches it [grr]

pgwithnumber3 · 03/09/2008 22:44

I will have to print that quote off solidgold and pin it on the kitchen door. DH will love you! He would have a heart attack. He is a fussy bugger and gold help if I dare cut a lime on his fecking precious granite worktop. "No citrus fruits on it" is going to be his epitaph.

solidgoldbrass · 03/09/2008 23:10

Scottishmummy: Have you ever inadvertently eaten your dinner off your pants then?

ScottishMummy · 03/09/2008 23:15

thanks for asking!aye spag bol a fecker to get the stains out out the gusset

junkcollector · 03/09/2008 23:46

What IS the point of housework anyway? They only mess it up again.

NattyThomasAndEllen · 04/09/2008 00:09

i do it when i feel like it. some days i get a feeling for it and do the whole house. some days i just hang the washing out and load the dishwasher.
dont beat urself up ova it. ur kids will remember a summer of fun with mummy. all i remember is my mum shouting cos we had made a mess, and cleaning constantly.
at least ur children will feel loved xx

SoulSputnik · 04/09/2008 02:52

I assume that people who can hoover once a month don't have toddlers. I have a 2.5 year old and a 10 month old (he is trying to stand). I have to tidy and hoover the living room everyday, or at least every other day otherwise there is food all over the floor. I mop the kitchen about once a week minimum, but last week i think it was mopped twice in the week (new record). Bathrooms about once a week, or sooner if its looking particularly grubby.

Bonifacio · 04/09/2008 07:37

Can I tell you all how great it is not to have to think about this stuff! Living abroad where home help is dangerously cheap, I have a live in housekeeper So everyday she:
Sweeps and mops all floors
Sweeps outside and waters plants (season depending)
Cleans every bathroom
Washes all pots (nothing dirty is ever in the sink she does that so often)
Opens curtains and makes beds
Breakfast for DP and me
Laundry and ironing

Weekly she:
twice weekly dusts all surfaces
once weekly cleans windows and mirrors
Cleans the inside of mine and DP's closet
Cleans DP's work shoes

Hmm can't think of anything else, she sometimes prepares the evening meal. Its going to be hell when I go back to UK or US and have to start doing it myself again!!

I would do it myself if she weren't here and at the weekend I do keep it tidy. I hate it to be a mess and couldn't cope with dust in particular.

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/09/2008 08:00

solidgoldbrass "I'm with Quentin Crisp, it doesn't get much worse after about 3 months", love the idea, but not sure I believe it - I have seen 'how clean is your house' - that's what happens!

thumbwitch, instead of hoover attachment, have you tried just using microfibre cloth damp?

bonifacio - are you in Corsica by any chance? I want someoen to do all that for me.

My house is a state, and I just can't be arsed. No excuses. Just can't be arsed.

Bonifacio · 04/09/2008 08:12

Ernest, I am in the Philippines, all home help is really cheap here! Its a god send!!

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/09/2008 08:28

But it doesn't actually matter if your house is not clean or tidy. It's not a big deal for there to be dust, or a few crumbs, or toys on the floor. Mountains of rotting rubbish are excessive of course, but there are so many more important, interesting things to do than housework.

at this thread. DH & I were debating the possibilities of hoovering and bleaching the dog yesterday as a possible shortcut to a cleaner & less smelly house.

thumbwitch · 04/09/2008 23:27

Soulsputnik - correct, no toddler yet, DS = 9mo.

Bonifacio - how MEAN of you to gloat! am equally x 1000000 as EtheB

Takver PMSL at bleaching/hoovering dog - excellent plan!!

Tanee58 · 04/09/2008 23:51

Ernest - hi!

Personally, I PLAN to vacuum once a week - REALITY is, I vacuum when it looks bad or guests are coming. Or run my shoe over the corridor carpet to pick up the worst of the cat hair! . Wood floors are great - the cat hair wafts to the edges.

Laundry is done weekly, washing up daily, dusting - um - with Quentin Crisp there. But friends say my house feels comfy and cosy, and DD has NEVER had food poisoning.

And nothing smells....

The people on 'How Clean' - certainly have isshoos. The rest of us have lives. '

Janni · 05/09/2008 00:09

I used to expend an awful lot of energy thinking about the housework that needed doing. I finally took the advice of sensible MNers and invested in a cleaner once a week. It has transformed my life and now I concentrate on keeping the place tidy which is a much easier proposition than scrubbing the bathroom or hoovering the bedrooms.

Bonifacio · 05/09/2008 05:47

Thumbwitch I know it was awful of me! I just couldn't help myself!!

belgo · 05/09/2008 07:09

If this thread was started by a man, how would we be reacting?

ErnestTheBavarian · 05/09/2008 09:15

sgb, that's the problem - it matters cos it gets me down.

Janni, I do what you did - spend ages thinking about/feeling bad about the HW. tried 2 cleaners - both totally rubbish & caused me miles more stress & here they're dead expensive - 12 to 15 euros an hour! That's about £10 to £12 an hour. that's a lot, isn't it? Or is that just me?

Takver · 06/09/2008 15:53

As a coda, following yet another discussion between DH and me, DD has just made us a star chart - everytime we sweep, hoover or mop the floor we get a star, and when we have seven we are supposed to go for an evening out!
I am not sure what happens if we try to go out before we have got our stars

3andnomore · 06/09/2008 16:01

this thread made me feel better
I am crap at housework and we are also all untidy....so, me trying to get on top of things tends to end up with me going into a frantic raging fit...because cleaning and all that seems to be so pointless.....sigh....

However, am starting UNiversity soon and need to do a major clearout and lcean up....and maybe it will be less messy if we have less stuff

SuperSillyus · 06/09/2008 16:08

Lol at this thread

I find tidying so boring and demoralising...the children come right behind me trashing.

I try really hard all the time but we are all so messy, I never win!

I like to rearrange the furniture though....makes tidying more interesting.

steviesgirl · 06/09/2008 16:36

YANBU. Who really likes doing the household chores anyway?

I'm slack too when it comes to housework. But I feel a lot better when I have a clean and tidy house. So I guess it pays to do it regularly, for your own self esteem really. I know that, but most of the time I still leave it!
