Was in asda today, Ds was having yet another paddy, so sat him down and quietly waited for him to calm as this usually works quickly. When a kind! member of staff told me I should be firmer with him as he will walk all over me when he is ten. I was speachless.

Nope, YANBU at all IMO your child, you deal with him in the way you choose. I would imagine when he is 10 you will have a well adjusted child you can reason with.

You are dealing with him perfectly - take no notice. What a silly and unhelpful comment.

There are lots of different ways of handling tantrums, all perfectly valid IMO. Yours sounds excellent and the way I would feel most comfortable with. The staff member could have offered you a cup of tea if she wanted to help.

It's just sooo easy to give out advice, and let's face it, if your children are going to go into meltdown, dollars to donuts it gonna be in a supermarket....

YANBU its none of her business. A lady working in Boots told me that I should put reins on DD "to control her" even though DD was doing absolutely nothing wrong. I said I didn't realise that Boots were now offering childcare advice free with every prescription

YANBU. I'd probably have complained but i am in the throes of PND and PMT so possibly a bit of an over-reaction.!

That annoys me so much, didn't their kids ever have tantrums fgs ?
With my kids in public at that age the best thing was to ignore, ignore, ignore, telling them off or getting 'tough' would just make it spiral into chaos !

YANBU - It sounds like you handled the tantrum really well, I'd be mad if someone, especially a stranger, said that. People have different attitudes to how tantrums should be dealt with (or not) but it is none of her business to tell you hers. And I think she's wrong .
Unfortunately if that happened to me I'm sure I'd be too shocked to think of anything clever to say so I must remember shoegazer's comment - brilliant!

YABU. You should have gone to M&S where you get a much better class of advice. The nice man at the checkout told me you should NEVER feed a baby at night as "It only makes them wake for it" and that he had imprisoned his wife in their bedroom to prevent her going to feed/comfort their two week old twins. Bastard

When he is ten? HOw very specific.

TPL Nice man....but he got it wrong - it's never feed them after midnight or they multiply (thats probably how they ended up with twins....)
