To want a couple of glasses of wine when pregnant??

I am nearly 10 weeks pregnant and would like to drink a couple of glasses of wine (per week) as I did when i was pregnant with my other children. The current guidelines are not to drink at all which is different to what it used to be.

Not interested in joimimg the bun ight here but just wondered if the benefits of drinking in pg and associated research could be added to the thread.

pinata - alcohol is produced as part of the digestive process but I am guessing that the benefits are possibly from reduced anxiety in the mother.

The frustrating thing here is that in real life I probably won't have the chance to discuss this with the righteous few* who disaprove of my enjoying a glass of wine. They will purse their lips and mutter to one another without addressing me. However, under no circumstances can I imagine anyone pressuring me to have a drink - pregnant or not - that is just not acceptable. But in the event that this baby does have problems I can just imagine the blame being placed at my door. The cleanest living person I know, who doesn't drink at all had a baby last year that has SN, I have heard people speculate as to whether she ate or drank something she shouldn't have and it really made me Sometimes we are just unlucky.

*Interestingly, I think that it is our generation who are the worst for this notion that risk can and should be eliminated, regardless of the evidence. Maybe our parents' generation have mellowed with time and life experience or maybe they grew up in a time when misfortune could be just that and not always blamed on someone.

"how come people want to believe this tenuous, sketchy research whilst dismissing that which says alcohol is bad, although there is lots more of it?"

That is simply untrue. There is no reputable research whatsoever which shows that small amounts of alcohol is bad. If you think you have found some please post a link, but I suspect it will be tenuous, sketchy and unconvincing!

What is the big deal about giving up alcohol when pg - its only for 9mths - get over it!

Starlight - tbh, I'm a bit at the amount of back and forth regarding the 'safe' limits of alcohol during pregnancy. My thinking is that surely its not so bad to give it up just for 9mths to ensure you give the baby the best start? Why wait for research to prove/disprove anything?

almostblue · 27/08/2008 21:48

"The admittance of alcohol consumption is simply one of the key criteria in the diagnosis of FAS/FASD to differentiate it from other developmental disorders, including those associated with birth trauma but which have no obvious cause..."

So what you are saying, then, is that in some cases, the only thing that differentiates FAS/FASD from other developmental disorders, including those associated with birth trauma but which have no obvious cause, is an admission of alcohol consumption?

pinata · 27/08/2008 21:50

there is however a flood of research saying alcohol generally is bad when pg - small amounts, large amounts, whatever, i don't think it really matters

there will always be someone somewhere trying to find a benefit.

all i know is that when i drink, i feel the effects. and after not drinking for 9 months, even a glass of wine made me feel whoozy and dehydrated the next day. i don't need any more proof than that to say it more than likely won't be doing my baby any good

No harm found...yet....its a drug imo...so, I wouldn't main line crack or smoke during pg any more than I would drink!

PussinJimmyChoos · 27/08/2008 22:00

Also - I did read the thread and have a BSc so I'm not exactly daft and do get the points that have been raised - no need for exasperated comments of 'the point '

almostblue · 27/08/2008 22:02

...but you might take paracetamol?

PussinJimmyChoos · 27/08/2008 22:03

No. I did not take a single jot of medication when pg with DS - would not even chance it with paracetamol.

and you drank no caffeine? nor had any pain relief other than water and TENS and that in labour and delivery?

PussinJimmyChoos · 27/08/2008 22:05

Starlight - don't all threads end up going around in circles in the end though

Big difference between turning down a glass of wine and turning down an epidural when you're in absolute agony, isn't there?

suey2 · 27/08/2008 22:07

piñata I didn't feel dehydrated or woozy the day after I had a glass of wine. It tasted good and complemented the food I was eating. I found it very relaxing. And given all of the other things I was avoiding, it was fantastic.

Pussin I find your last post ridiculous. Sorry. Paracetamol is also a drug but known to be harmless ( in moderation ) during pregnancy

PussinJimmyChoos · 27/08/2008 22:08

Expat Course I had drugs in labour!! I do see your point there but by the time labour is established, the baby is fully formed and ready to come out..so....

I did however have tea and the odd latte...so, perhaps not as drug free as I thought...
