PILs park in the mother and baby space all the time as a matter of course using the fact they have a child seat in there as an excuse!! Never take my dcs shopping never why would they? That is very very unreasonable imo and makes me ! They have been challanged about it and they say they make a joke about they left the kids at home!
Observant ones will notice I put this on another thread but then thought it deserves an aibu in its own right iyswim!

Oooh yes - sling much much much easier IMO. Didn't see that bit. Stick with the sling if you're finding a buggy and a trolley difficult.

theSuburbanDryad · 24/08/2008 11:16

Gangle - how old is your baby? I found a ring sling much easier than a Baby Bjorn type thing. I'll be using a Didymos wrap for my new baby (not due till Feb but it doesn't hurt to plan, eh?? ) which can be faffy until you work them out and then they're brilliant. Better for baby's posture too.

But Gangle, there are trolleys with baby seats fitted, that take babies from 0-9 months. Well there are at my local Waitrose and Tesco anyway.

chonky · 24/08/2008 11:18

AS Jimjams says - why not swap supermarkets if the provisioning with trolleys/ spaces doesn't meet your needs.

anonandlikeit · 24/08/2008 11:19

I've not read the entire thread so sorry if I'm stating the obvious but OBVIOUSLY disabled bays are essential if people with limited mobility are able to have some basic independence.

Mother & baby spaces are a little luxury & if there is one free fine, if not & you have a large bum(like me) go to the farthest corner of the car park there are usually spaces.
Leave your baby safely strapped in the car, get a trolley, take it to the car & put baby in trolley &* nappy bag & anything else you need - if its raining RUN .. You won't shrink! Once inside the supermarket you can sort yourself out!

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 24/08/2008 11:20

Didymos is lovely and so so so comfortable. I used a ring sling for quick trips or a wilkinet when I needed to use the sling from the car though as I found them easier than the didymos.

But you wouldn't get wet if you were in a multistorey - unless you were on the very top.

Not...open air!!

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 24/08/2008 11:27

Those are shopping centres not supermarkets. In which case baby will be in a buggy so presumably it doesn't actually matter how far you have to walk? I don't think I ever walked 5 minutes to my car in Bluewater even although the car parks are massive.

I've walked for 5 minutes up a hill to an overflow car park in Paignton zoo (along with lots of other families) but people don't seem to struggle there (there are no parent and child spaces- hoorah).

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/08/2008 11:27

Have never taken a buggy to a supermarket, weird idea to me(unless I was walking there!)
I find these parent space threads are always the same.

I stick to my usual answer - move all parent and toddler spaces as far from the store as possible, just because you have a baby or toddler doesn't mean you can't walk (with buggy or not) to the store, does it? Surely all that is needed (or desired?) is a little more room to get kids out of the back seats of the car. All spaces at the front of a store should be disabled only spaces, for people with real need.
Better still, if you really can't manage a weekly shop then please remember stores are open 24 hours now! Go shopping when kids are in bed if you can get a babysitter or do it online!

I agree mumfor1st although I think an even better solution would be just to make all spaces a little bit bigger. Our local Sainsbury's now has oversized car large spaces that lots of people haven't yet noticed and I tend to park my oversized 7-seater there so I don't have to show myself up parking badly.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 24/08/2008 11:32

Ok I opened myself to a discussion about the ins and outs of car park sizes. But really it's not a massive problem for those of us lucky enough to be fully mobile. Not even in the rain (being blessed with this strange waterproof substance called skin )

Dare I mention I have a new fangled invention called a hood on my coat (I don't do fashion )

mumfor1standmaybe2ndtime · 24/08/2008 11:36

Agree jimjam that spaces do need to be a little bigger in some carparks whether you have kids or not!
Our Sainsburys has much bigger spaces than the Asda car park, which is why I prefer to go to Sainsburys! I only have a Ford Focus Saloon so it isn't huge, but when we had a Nissan 200sx it was a 2 door and had very wide doors, so I would 'park badly' at the back of the carpark to give myself more room

anonandlikeit · 24/08/2008 11:36

Ahh thats why i don't care if i get wet, by the time ds2 has swung off of my hair a few times just trying to get out of the door i'm pleased if i just leave the house with my trousers on the right way round.
