This is why:

My DS is ASD and I was absolutely devastated until I found the SN Board and realised quite how many of us are out there. That board makes me feel like DS belongs to a very special club.

I BF my dd till 15 months because of encouragement on MN. I stopped at 4 months with ds because I had not yet discovered it and thought I had "done my bit".

Given me more clever answers and quotes with which to shut my sometimes arsehole dh up with than I can shake a stick at.

A Mnetter sent back DS's much loved bear that we left in a hotel. She made the effort to drive to the hotel, find our bear and send him back to us.

Given me outstanding career advice.

Given me parenting tips that have quite literally stopped me from storming down to my DC's bedroom and shrieking like a virago at them - many, many times.......

Counselled me through my crappy relationship with my Mum and helped me get to a point where I can put up with her nonsense.

and most of all made me feel like I am actually a pretty great Mum, when I don't get much encouragement from elsewhere.

All that done by one website for one person.

you will find that some MNers like the 'nest of vipers' reference in an affectionate/ironic kind of way.

i think you have both depending on the situation mnetters are helpfull and generous beyond what they need to be. however they also like a good fight.

im all for healthy debate but i do think that a few mnetters resort to personal attacks against the op when they run out of reasonable arguments to make.

That is great semiprecious, as that is what MN is for really.

I agree Seashells that debate is good, but you are right that it can becmoe personal attacks in some situations

I think that MN is great most of the time, but feel that occasionally people use it as a way of venting their anger (i.e. on someone else's thread, not on their own, that's ok, we all need a rant sometimes) or to make themselves feel superior by making others feel stupid or a way of reaffirming their self belief by being smug.

Now, I love mnet, I really do, but sometimes I don't find it supportive, it actually makes me feel worse, and sometimes I just don't post things I want to post for fear of being made to feel stupid.

So, I don't think YABU, but I think it goes in peaks and troughs. I think I am reaching a trough at the moment (no pig references please!).
