AIBU to think sod off and keep your mouth shut.

So we are at the beach (rain held off for a blessed while) and DS2 is in the sea with his body board, in a wet suit and having the time of his life when he comes out to me (stood in the surf) and says mummy something bit my foot! SO I try to look at his foot and he wont let me and he is now crying mummy mummy it hurts it hurts (he is 7) so a life guard comes over and ask "is it a weaver"? A whater says I. Small fish that likes to hide in the sand under water and if you are unlucky enough to tread on it it has a sting that would fell a grown man he tells me as I look all townie and daft!

Hot water will fix it he says so DS2 hobbles up to the life guard station crying and is given a bucket of hot water to stick said foot in to, now the life guard tells me that these stings hurt, really really hurt and putting it in the hot water will help it stop hurting quicker but will also hurt, DS2 is screaming in pain now and I was trying to calm him and tell him that the hot water would only hurt a little bit but the pain would go much faster, but being 7 and in a lot of pain he was having none of it and getting more and more upset.....

Then some woman who is sat on the beach with her family in frount of the lifeguard station sticks her head up and says " HE IS MAKING A FUSS CAUSE YOU ARE THERE, I AM SURE YOU ARE A NICE WOMAN AND ALL BUT GO AWAY AND LET THE LIFE GUARD DEAL WITH HIM"

Oh yes thats helpful Mrs I dont think,

I was really pissed off and she sat muttering to her family about the fuss DS2 was making.

I was about to say madam I am not a nice woman in the least when I am pissed off would you like a smack in the mouth to prove it!

DSs foot was red and swollen and painfull for the following 6 hours despite the hot water, so beware the weaver fish, and bloody stupid women sat on beaches that think the best was to deal with a hurt 7 year old is to leave him for someone else to deal with

weaver fish stings are nasty. Never had one myself but seen others get them.

yes leaving your son when he was in pain would obviously have been a great thing to do and definately would not have made him more upset that mum was leaving....not

Stupid woman. Should have kept her mouth shut.

woman was confused really .. it is true that many children make less fuss when hurt whilst in the care of others (not their parents), but a parent walking away when child is hurt is not appropriate

still think she was bloody brave

haven't heard of weaver fish stings for years - they were really bad when i was a kid but you don't really hear of them now. poor ds

YANBU, I wouldn't have just thought it, I'd have said something, amazed you managed to resist the temptation.

Did she go to the Marquis De Sade school of parenting? Telling you to walk away from your child when they're frightened and in pain.

OK so he was REALLY giving it some welly but the life guard said he had had grown men make as much fuss.

I was given a leaflet to read all about this little fishy and it would seem it is more painful then a jelly fish sting.

DS1 was asking if someone was going to have to pee on DS2 foot (too much watching surfs up me thinks)

I am glad I was not over reacting to being told to go away and leave a crying in pain 7 year old with a stranger to deal with.

And weaver fish stings are extremely painful too, far worse than a bee or wasp sting., I think I 'd have been shrieking my head off too, how she expects a 7 year old to do anything else is beyond me.

YANBU, a 7yo should not be left alone with a stranger when he is hurt and frightenend.

You should have given the old bat a slap with a smelly fish.

If I had seen a parent in that situation I would have given a supportive look, I may have even ask if I could help at all not say leave him.
I really was beyond cross, I felt a fishwife moment coming on

And we did not get ice cream as thought getting DS2 home (well to in laws) was best thing...I was so looking forward to that ice cream
Going to make a lovely donation to the lifeboat people though as they run the life guards and the bloke was lovely, helpful, kind and calm about it all.

i can imagine my mother (a retired head teacher) involving herself unhelpfully... unsolicited. even the thought of it makes me cringe.

DS2 is fine now and has not been put off going in to the sea,

I do have quite a "colourful temper" sometimes but I think going in to one at Mrs stupid would have made be feel better but DS2 worse, so I just said No I dont think leaving him will quiten him down, he is in a lot of pain and that is why he is screaming.

Ohhhhhh please let her fall in to stinging nettles or a big wet cow pat, weaver fish are not as common as all that so as much as I would like her to tread/ sit/ swallow a whole host of them me thinks it unlikly..... maybe the next mother she insults will slap her silly who knows
