I know it isnt illegal but surely its wrong morally?

I was at the park on Friday with my PFB (!) who is 7 months and we were on the swings when a set of grandparents turned up with a little boy who looked to be about 2 years old. They sat him on the swing next to my DD and the woman lit a cigarette and proceeded to smoke.

The park was full of children.

I think its really wrong?

As an ex smoker I am probably the worst type to comment but I too think it is prob reasonable not to smoke in a play area.

Yes its outside, and yes its a free country, but as a courtesy to others where smoke will dissipate to others I think it would be prudent to abstain.

The thing is how long are you going to be at a park 1 hour max?

Surely you can refrain from smoking until you leave?

One thing that boils my piss is smoking outside entrances.....Especially hospitals.

A few weeks ago i was discharged from hospital feelingg pretty ill and had to walk through a plume of smoke just to get out. I was wretching all the way. That is just plain idiotic and makes me angry

It is wrong to smoke around kids. It's as simple as that. Bad example, and smoking kills people every day.
I am always amazed about MN. You have people shot down in flames for not breasfeeding/ weaning earlier than 6 months and other things of a similar nature, yet some are trying to say smoking in a kids playground is ok? Give me a break.
Who needs billboard advertisments when you have adults doing the advertising for them by standing smoking around kids. It really gets my goat.It should be banned except in specified designated areas.Hey, you're addicted to the stuff, right? So you have to have allowances made for you.Doesn't matter if kids see you doing it and think it's cool.

Oh and so it continues, excellent!

Been out all day (visiting a sickly grandma at hospital, she has never smoked but has heart and lung problems due to age, bless her)

Anyway, back to the distraction which is the topic ...

Isn't it odd that those that condone the behaviour (smoking rather than dog poo/drinking/whatever) find it necessary to make light of it with remarks such as "Oh no its got serious again" etc. I can't remember who said this and I can't be bothered to re read it.

Surely the very fact that what about 60/70% are saying that it is NOT acceptable gives at least some credibility to the argument? Or when on such dodgy ground, is it easier to just laugh at those that us that are bothered (most of us) as precious. I repeat that I don't mind being precious about my 7 month old and to date (!) and yes, she has only had vegetables and organic chicken! She is only 7 months old for goodness sake, what am I meant to have given her a pint and some crisps maybe?!

Its HER health. Surely that (to me) is the most important thing in the world, whether I smoked or not.

My argument is not about smoking in the park, its about smoking right next to a childs swing! And the baby swings at that. She cant even have vicks until 6 months of age, but maybe whiffs of cigarette smoke at 7 months?!

Come on people, really you think its ok to smoke next to children?

StarlightMacKenzie - why couldn't the bloke push the child whilst the woman went and stood in a corner to smoke?

These grandparents were only in their 50's.
I only knew she was "grandma" because the little boy called her so.

My friend is 42 and smoked during pregnancy (know thats different) but claimed to "not know" that it was bad/harmful/anti social. I dont think that that washes.

If these had been 80 years old then I would have probably have turned a blind eye, whilst still removing my DD asap ! But 50/60 isn't old.

I sympathise with not being able to smoke anywhere but can not believe that anyone (until I came on here) would believe that in front of a 2 year old and a baby would be a bright idea

To those that have accused me of being selfish, it isnt about me, its about DD and the other kids in the play area (no dogs, its a fenced off small area, full of young children and their parents).
